Goodafternoon, WeldingWeb!!So, a little while back I set out to build a low budget, highly portable welding table... I budgeted $200 for the build, and this is what I came up with:It's got 8" rear wheels, and smaller casters up front... I used scrap 1/2" plate for the top, and I also used the lessons I'd learned from building my previous table to improve the design of this one...Among these features are:-Rectangular sub-frame to resist warping of the tabletop-Expended metal shelf-"BAR" storage system for clamps and vise-grips-Overhang for clampingThis is a build I did for individuals who are newer to welding, and dont yet have a good work surface... I started out on the floor, and then "upgraded" to a flipped-over scrap bin with a mesh top. After way too long, I finally build a 3x5 table although I now wish I'd done a LOT differently, lol. Anyway, hopefully a person could take some inspiration from this design and could build a nice table for less money than they could purchase one...Enjoy the videos, and happy welding guys [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:Nice work - but why were you not using the avani air cleaner  -- with the welding fumes and that dragons breath heater you had running, how could you stand the air in there even with one door half open- time to invest in a good vented shop heater. Thanks for the great build post.Cheers PatrickCheers, Patrick
Reply:I notice on your Longevity Mig you have an amperage/volts setting knobs. Does it indicate IPM wire speed also? My Miller 252 has strictly Wire speed/volts settings. Reply:I would guess that table now is in the 300-350 pound range?  Are those casters gonna hold up, or, if you DID build it with a bigger top, you would be looking for some REALLY heavy duty casters for the weight, I would think.I don't think there's a welding video you've made (chucke2009) that I haven't watched, and I like not having someone who uses other-than normal everyday language and/or leaves out lots of details (that's usually what screws up most people's home projects).  Your videos are plain language/detailed.I'm just a sub-beginner, but I appreciate your insights.thanks(I like that table, and the size makes it easy to keep out of the way, too)

Reply:Originally Posted by 7A749I would have done the wheels different too. Phenolic casters & wheels are my personal fave, being they're not too expensive, they're lightweight compared to cast or steel wheels & they hold a LOT of weight.I learned the hard way using the rubber wheels you used Lanse. They went flat in a big hurry. I built a cart form my old SCP 200 C MIG machine/feeder combo. It was heavy & big. After sitting in one spot for about a month, the wheels were completely flat on the bottom. It would hardly even move, ended up dragging it out so I could fix it. No fun  I had to break paint on the cart I had them on & weld new, larger axles to it to accommodate the 10" phenolic wheels I replaced them with. It was a PITA. Been using phenolics since & never had any problems with them. I built a small welding table I ended up selling to Milkerman. I used a wheelbarrow design with two wheels & two legs with handles to pick up one end & roll it around. A little heavy, but stayed put where I parked it. I've built three other tables the same way since. It turned out good man.
Reply:Jeeze guys, it's really not *that* heavy by itself... [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:If you wanted a vice on the table couldn't you weld a receiver tube to the overhang and cross member, mount a vice on a length of tube to slide in the receiver.  This is the way I did it on a small table I made from a portable Delta miter saw bench.  It's hard to tell from the video if there would be a stability problem from mounting a vice this way.
