Hello Everyone, my name is Todd.Currently 20 years old and near finishing my finish my 2nd year as an Australian welding apprentice.I've passed through here a couple times finding tips and tricks but I thought it'd be about time I made a post.Ok now to the point.. I would like to begin a project and for that project I want to make a bobber! Now.. This project will most probably be long term as I'd like to make as much as I can by myself. There's just one problem.. Step 1.Legit, I don't even know where to start. So who can help me along with this project?Using Tapatalk
Reply:I have been thinking of building a jumbo jet, is there anyone who can point me in the right direction of where to start?Lincoln mig-Pak 180, Leather gloves, vice grips, a couple screw drivers, needle nose pliers, a file, dog, cat and a bird
Reply:Great.. Cockiness straight from the start. Hopefully you're not setting an example for the rest of the forum.Using Tapatalk
Reply:You'll need to learn the ins and outs of tubing.Bending, cope-ing, and welding. Then you're off and running - almost. You'll have to decide if you want to learn / make friends with a machinist and make all the parts, or buy bolt ons from the Harley style market.Good luck!  Keep us posted.Just remember, this is a project that YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON YOUR WELDS!Miller Dynasty 200DXMiller Spectrum 250DMiller Millermatic 200Bunch of old blue dinosaurs....
Reply:I'm doing a dual certificate through my apprenticeship so I will be learning machining myself eventually so that should become useful.Using Tapatalk
Reply:I would say go to the junk yard and find some motorcycle frames to play around with and practice cutting and getting the angle and rake that you like then use it as a template to build your real one with . They will help with things like motor mounts suspension if you go that route. Don't let all the negative people get to ya. There is lots of info on here but tons of you can't weld on a trailer can't build a hitch can't do this or that. Well some people shouldn't. But it got built by someone.I would recommend having the welds inspected or looked at by someone before you set out on the road. Keep us posted
Reply:I suggest that you start by making some of the tools you will need to build a frame.1. tubing bender2. frame jig3. tubing notcherAnyone want to help me expand this list?Good luck and above all else keep it safe.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Not being sarcastic but it looks like your government will be outlawing motorcycles soon! What specopswelder said is a really good starting point. Also, are you familiar with the saying "There is always one in every crowd"?Well there are 6 or 8 here!

Reply:To the OP - you will probably get into a lot of fixturing / adjusting.  Good bicycle builders know a lot about that:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...bicycle-thread
Reply:tubing nothcer isn't 100% necessary long as you are good with a grinder. Are we building a metric bobber or a Hardly dangerous chopper. Lots of good info on metric stuff at the chopper under ground. There was a write up in a american chopper mag called "The Horse" on how to build a jig for building frames in. I've helped my dad build several frames for metric bikes,we're a world away from each other but I might be able to help ya. Here are the plans for the frame jig> http://www.buschandbusch.com/jig93 Bobcat 225GMillerMatic 135HF Tig 91811
Reply:First you need to decide if your going to mod an existing bike or build from scratch.  Start reading herehttp://www.chopperhandbook.com/
