I am about to start building a metal fence at my house and I am looking for ideas to build my own or just buy some pipe stands to be able to handle the 24' sticks of pipes. Where is a decent place to pick three or four of these up.Walter
Reply:If you want new the best deal I found was on Ebay. Zoro tools had Sumner brand folding stands for $80.00 each shipped. I have been happy with the ones I bought there.
Reply:I agree , you can't build them for $80.00. http://www.industrialladder.com/prod...FQcOaQodpW4A7w780375Sumner 780375 Hi Jack HD with Vee Head$76.55 Each23.00 lbshttp://www.toolup.com/Sumner-780375-...i-V-Head-Style$75.97When I was a apprentice we made them with 2" schedule 40 black pipe. Determine how high you want them and cut pipe to length. Divide into thirds diameter wise. Extend the lines from end of pipe 18". Now cut on those lines to make grooved openings. Heat where all cuts end and bend each section out to form the legs. Next we would ACQUIRE rebar from iron workers and weld to the now formed legs to keep from spreading near bottom . Now it was time to ACQUIRE the screw jacks from the guys that were framing the decks with scaffolding and reshores. Just happened that thier screw jacks fit perfect in our newly made 2" pipe stand to be. We just cut off their top channel and added our angle. Worked out great but now a days it's cheaper just to buy them.
Reply:thanks a bunch guys was looking at the Sumner and blackjack I think.Walter
Reply:I have made five stands using a plow disk for the base, welding a short section of 2 7/8" pipe to it then sliding a piece of 2 3/8 inside the 2 7/8. I welded a nut over a hole in the 2 7/8 and used a bolt with a handle welded to it to lock the 2 3/8 to the right height. The top of the 2/ 3/8 has a 6" piece of angle welded to it. I have since made other pieces with 2 3/8 stems to go on them, one has a vise, another will soon have a bench grinder and another will have rollers. So far, all the material has come from my supply pile but it looks like I will have to buy the rollers.
Reply:great idea thanksWalter

Reply:Mine are the older black ones but they are good. I twisted the handle off the bolt monkey hunching it too many times.
Reply:Gotcha I think I need at least three or four of them. Wonder how and shipping will kill me. Walter |
