Does anyone know the average/basic salary for an entry level welder? Thanks
Reply:Depends a lot on what they are doing. A basic mig monkey doing production, maybe $10-11 / hour. Tig maybe $15-18 and up. A lot of different variables, location being just one of them..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Pay is pretty crappy for entry level welding, I was welding dumpsters to get my feet wet for 12 an hour, got a new job month later making 12 in a shop tigging on aluminum. All depends on your area.Miller Maxstar 200 SDPiperliner #10 Gold
Reply:Entry level minimum wage.
Reply:So first couple jobs out of a college/cert. will be crap, yeah?
Reply:Depends. The better you are, the more likely you will have a chance at a decent job. However in this economy, it's an employers market. Too many out of work welders, too few jobs. That means an employer can offer less money and get people with more experience. Why pay premium wages to the kid right out of school, when there are a dozen guys all with 5+ years of experience all looking for some sort of job since unemployment has run out on them since they got laid off? Those guys are willing to take a job for lower wages simply to have work and keep making the house/car payments. Some areas though there may be more jobs than welders. In that case, pay rates go up if you can prove you have the skills. Or  you may find a small shop who is willing to pay more to try and keep someone long term.Pretty much new students are always on the low end of the pay scale despite what schools want to lead you to believe. In a Union, you'd be an apprentice starting out, and get lower wages. Same thing works if you skip the 4 years in the Union and go to school, you still start at the bottom. Typically that means you get the $hit jobs, for $hit pay and have to earn your spot..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:If your inexperienced, employers won't have high requirement for you which means you won't make a ton of cash. If you have a bunch of experience and your highly skilled at what you do, employers will want and require you in which case you will make more cash.Just because you went to school and got yourself a cert doesn't mean you have experience. Reply:I've said it before...In this economy it's best to have other mechanical skills where welding is a big plus on your resume.....Fab/repair shops and plants need mechs or welders, and more often mechs that can also weld....The yellow gear shop that build or repairs yellow gear, also has needs for hydraulic mechs and electricians and engine guys....The guy that can do it all is the first hired, and the last fired....Same for plants...Same for shutdown crews. When starting out, consider a position as a mech who can weld where you will have opportunity to get experience in those other skills, where as a fulltime welder it won't happen. All doctors start out a general medical guys, then many advance into high paid narrow specialities...same for nurses...same for lawyers.
Reply:CB&I has some big projects coming up, and they are gonna be looking for 11,000 welders they don't know where they will get them. A CB&I recruiter came to my school and told me that about 3-4 weeks ago.Miller Maxstar 200 SDPiperliner #10 Gold

Reply:Yeah, but chances are you aren't going to walk right out of school and start welding at the nuke plant... So there is a high paying job, but you won't qualify... Probably part of the reason they are still looking for help. Many times there are plenty of those jobs. Problem is with out the experience, you won't get hired.I was talking to a friend over Christmas. He was commenting that the store he works at was having trouble finding anyone who would simply pass the basic criminal back ground check or drug test. Plenty of applicants, not one who didn't have convictions or passed the drug screening.... It's amazing how many kids don't realize what convictions are going to do to you in the future. Kid of a friend of the family worked with me two summers ago while going to school for auto mechanics. He ended up with the best grades in his class, but couldn't find a decent job when he graduated. All it took was the look at his resume and his conviction for possession with intent to distribute... and that pretty much ended his interview. It didn't matter that he wasn't selling, he had enough on him when they caught him to hang that charge on him and make it stick..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:If you can weld pipe or boiler tubes and have every weld you do pass X-ray, then you potentially have the skills to work in a nuke plant. Reply:Young men do not seem to realize that in the job market today their life style and personal life is a big factor that is considered by employers.  Criminal convictions for felonies automatically preclude employment in an area where a TWIC card is needed.  A suitable driving record is necessary for any company that needs to insure you to operate their equipment.  Both of these are formally documented and readily available to employers.  The digital age was not something that I had to consider when I was young but is and integral part of the employment process today.  And please do not forget the pictures and posts shared on Facebook and other social sharing networks.  These are all available to potential employers to check on without you even knowing about it.  They create a first impression that the employer has access to before they even decide if he wants to spend the time and $$$ to conduct an interview.  It isn't always how talented an applicant is that affects how attractive they are to an employer.  But how "employable" they are to the company!  Good luck in the job marker today.   Originally Posted by DSWYeah, but chances are you aren't going to walk right out of school and start welding at the nuke plant...
