I've been trying to find a small (preferably 8-10") bandsaw suitable for light duty metal cutting for under $500.  I cut mostly aluminum, but sometimes steel and stainless as well.  Material thickness is typically 3/8" or less.  Even a small wood cutting bandsaw like the $250 10" Rikon 10-305 would be fine except the speed (2780 ft/min) is way too high for metal cutting.  I tried a VFD on one, but the torque at low speed was too low to be usable.  Replacing the motor with a DC gearmotor would work, but too expensive.  The cheapest suitable motor I found on ebay was $275.  (That was a nice Dayton 1/4 HP DC motor geared down to 500 RPM--perfect except for the price)http://www.amazon.com/Rikon-10-305-B...5792624&sr=8-2This Grizzly model might work except it is too big and expensive:http://www.grizzly.com/catalog/2010/Main/562And these tiny models seem too puny:http://www.minicrafttools.com/37172.htmlhttp://www.micromark.com/VARIABLE-SP...ign=GoogleBaseElectronics Engineer (embedded controls)Miller 200DX w/ Coolmate 3Thermal Dynamics 82 plasma cutterGrizzly G0678 8x30 millPM1440BV 14x40 latheHF 6x12 surface grinder
