I posted this up because so many young folks seem to be looking in, and this is definitely not in shop class. I hope it's welding related as "removal of weld" that was put on. re;http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=42180There are always alternatives; here a 1950's plain cylindrical grinder finishes a driving taper at a pretty good speed (the actual grind starts at about 5 1/2 minutes. Also shown is the use of a "long taper lathe file", I wish I would have discovered these before I was buying all those pretty Starret and B&S tools... These are definitely "buy US only" if you get one.The working surface had already been turned +.005" on the straight surface (no use, just looks only) and +.012"-.015" on the taper (this the bidnuss part). For the old hands here, when someone tells you "grinding is expensive", show the vid, it doesn't take long for a 50 year old machine that resolves to 50 millionths to finish on size for a taper or bearing! Video belowMatt
Reply:Great video. Grinding is definitely a weak area for me. I wish I knew more about it and had the right equipment for it.  Thanks.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

Reply:Originally Posted by Matt_MaguireA grinder is one of those things that only makes sense for certain things. I'll still machine a one off surface on the lathe.Very infrequently I'll tool steel weld a surface for a needle bearing and have the ARA autoshop in town grind it for me (those guys work way too cheap).I'm as proud of the long taper lathe file used in the vid as anything. It's not that long ago I thought I would give one a try and after buying it I thought to myself "Matt you're a DUMBA$$ for not trying this sooner ". I got the big one several years ago and have not purchased roll abrasive since, it still brings up a beautiful finish fast. Link here;http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/NNSRIT...MT4NO=87302194Matt
