I had some 1/2 plate that was 6in long  laying around in the scrap bucket so I decided to cut and angle on it with the harris torch and do a 1g open root test. I ran the root (3/32 gap) with the longevity Mig and had some drippings on the bottom because of phone calls and dogs pulling at my leg. Then I ran all the other passes with the Lincoln dc buzz box with some 3/32 7018 on 95 amps. I took lots of pics so all of you out there tell me how the 15 year old did Sent from my C811 4G using Tapatalk

Reply:please put the dog in the other room when welding. bad things can happen fast to you or him. He doesn't know enough  to look away from your arc.I could barely heat a pizza at your age, Good work and keep practicing ( without distractions).
Reply:throw a backer behind that root and fill completely with 7018!imo, it is great practice to learn how to run rod into the depths of a bevel, without inclusions. plus that's the only way I have structural tested for stick.if you want to get into open root welding, as in pipe, get some 6010 and go to town!looks great man, im just throwing things out there that may make you a little more. . . . .common. open, wire fed root is a big thing, but I think running strait 7018 with backer is a better place to start. 1g, 3g/4g, then open root 6g 6010/7018, then wire-fed operationsand run your backer long to eliminate start/ finish in the weld "test" area. give you a much better idea of how you are doingLast edited by 92dlxman; 02-01-2014 at 11:19 PM.bosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin

Reply:Fit up doesn't look all that good from what I can tell in those blurry picts. I tell all the guys who are doing their bevel buts that the better the fit up, the easier it is to do good joints. A few more minutes with the grinder will make a world of difference. When you get done, you should be able to hold the two up tight together and not see light between the two pieces. You ends look very wide, middle looks tight. That will be a real PITA when you go to go 6010 roots if you aren't really good at managing the puddle. To wide and it will want to open up and drop out, too narrow and getting full pen will be difficult. Most of the guys once they do two or three don't have issues when I prep the plates. However they can't make their own plates work because they don't spend the time to really prep them right. That's usually 90% of the battle right there.Beads are really tough to see. Earlier ones don't look as nice as the later ones. It wouldn't surprise me if when the plate heated up the extra heat helped you with those later beads. If that's the case, it's usually an indication your earlier beads could have been a bit hotter..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I like a penny gap and a penny land.
Reply:A few of the earlier ones appear to have cold toes which seems to have went away In the later passes which as DSW stated means you could have run them a bit hotter. I know small current adjustments are tough on a tapped machine. Cut it up and stick it in the press to see what it looks like. Overall not bad keep up the practice, everyone starts somewhere and seemingly for the most part you have it down
Reply:yeah like said above take your time and do good prep work, it makes the welding process that much easier!R.T. Welding LLCOn Site ServiceColumbus, NJ
