New to welding, picked up my 1st welder a few weeks ago.... Tonight, I got this off of kijiji.caMilwaulkee Portaband saw.... barely used with stand $220cdnWorkmate was already mine.... going to convert that to a portable part-time welding table..... Attached Images
Reply:Might want to send that portaband to me so it doesn't get damaged in the fire from the wood top on your "welding table"."The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government." Reply:With base no less. We don't get to hear much 1st hand info on the Milwaulkee base. Keep us up to date with the real story.Just so ya know, I think that base alone retails for a pretty good bundle by itself. Like $250.00 or there abouts. The saws are far from low budget. You got a heck of a deal."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:It was the guys dad's. It's the Milwaukee 6230 bandsaw.I estimate it to be about 10-15yrs old. Probably one of the early-mid ones. The ser. # is right in the middle of the range. (678D).6amps.He said that his dad used it on one project.re: workmate / part-time welding table. Not sure how much airspace I need to protect the wood from the welding.... I'm hoping 1" should be enough to protect the wood from melting.I have another cheap (still in box) workmate knockoff still in the box from a few years ago, and I might use the base as the legs for my welding table. - it's been sitting up in the rafters for the last couple years. The base on my B&D one is more stable, but I'd hate to burn it.
Reply:I did that, just take the wood off and replace with steel...handy and folds up out of the way.
Reply:You stoll that. Good job. LOL. Seriously, let us know how that base works. I have the 6" portaband.Come try it out and stay a while.
Reply:I would just build a small welding table instead of using the workmate. It'd be pretty inexpensive to build one, you'll learn something doing it and you'll have something that isn't going to ignite while you're trying to work on something.Speaking of fires...make sure you get a good drychem fire extinguisher (10lb bottle) in your shop area.
