Well, I'm not very good at producing video's , but hopefully I can get the point across. I've always wondered about voltage outputs on my Stick welder as the current remains constant. It's interesting to see how the voltage increases dramatically as I pulled the stick away (long arc) from the base metal. Since the resistance of the arc increases as the distance increases, the machine must increase voltage. I used my Miller Maxstar 150S, 3/32 6011 rod, and 70 amps for this test. If you have a sharp eye, you can see the voltage is as low as 20.7 volts during short arc, and 39.5 long arc. Using the electronic formula for watts, short arcing produced 1449 watts, long arcing 2,765 watts. Unfortunately, long arcing is not a good thing, and much of the heat  is dissipated in the surrounding air. I know this is common knowledge to many of the pro's on this forum, but I find studying electronics interesting, and helps me understand how these welders work the way they do. Also, if anyone finds error in my line of thinking here, I have no problem swallowing my pride.... LOL someth'n tells me you will anyway. Reply:1449 watts, Is about 13 amps on a 115 volt line and 2,765 watts is about 25 amps.Divide in half for 230 volt line. In a CC machine the voltage does go up and down. That is why Lincoln Electric coined their phrase VV or variable Voltage for stick welding.Plasma cutting is also a CC process. with cutting tables we use the arc voltage to tell how far the tip is away from the plate. And use it to move the torch up and down if the plate is warped, keeping the arc length (tip distance) the same. You have basic ohms / watts law in play here. If one of three factors is constant and you change one the third will change also. won't be able to see the video until I get home, You tube is blocked at work.

Reply:CC welders are not exactly CC.  The current does vary with the arc voltage - depending on the VA curve of your machine."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:Also the Miller link mentioned in post # 11. It's a bit dense, but it should answer a lot of your questions- even ones you didn't ask!JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
