Hey Yall! =)watching more welding vids today, thought this one was pretty cool but doesn't explain how he does it and kinda gets repitative. Should get ChuckE2009 there to explain how to do the weld for the viewer at home!
Reply:Neat video.  I like all that welding without the use of filler. "Hey I didn't come to look and learn, I came to turn and burn.... If I can't light up, I'm gonna light out!"-JodyIdealarc 250 "Fatman"MM 252MM 211 "Little boy" Victor Torches
Reply:I was watching pretty close but I think he used fill metal on both. looked like he removed it when he stopped the weld. I didn't know you could weld without filler metal??
Reply:He is using filler rod. You can see it to the right side of the tungsten. Around 7 minutes, he says he used 308 filler.

Reply:He had the wire on the inside through the gap. That part where he was saying you need that line down the middle, not the best advice. I've seen that line show up on XRay and be called 'hollow bead'. That line comes from welding real hot, you can turn it down a tad and lose the line and still have a nice looking root.
Reply:That "line down the middle" I always saw as a bad thing. Mainly because every times I saw a "line down the middle" I also saw a crack in the line. What I figured it was is the weld cools to fast pulling away in the middle causing the line/crack.
Reply:1st part of video he is feeding the filler from the INSIDE of the pipe2nd part he is using "lay wire" technique on the outside- laying the wire in front of the weld pool direction.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:One question,I'm just a hobby welder ...why does he remove the torch that way ?Is'n supposed you wait with your postflow time so the weld doesn't get contaminated?

Reply:Is that referred to as "snapping out"?  Is that the same if you unit is lift start?Any day I get to weld is a good day!
Reply:I would be very interested in seeing a stainless weld with the "line down the middle" bend tested.
Reply:I showed this video to my welding teacher and he said that's the technique he was taught back in the 70's for tig roll welding. He said the puddle stretches out onto the sidewalls of the bevel while it simultaneously sinks down through the gap to form the root pass. With the middle being the focus point for heat and gravity and the filler metal being fed into the middle and with enough welding current needed to make this all happen, he said that's why you get the line down the middle otherwise you are welding too cold. Shown him the last comment about bend tests and he said the rootpass will be perfectly fine as he's seen and done it all. said its not the same as hollow bead or linear crack but a welding inspector with no welding experience or experience in general will think its something that it isn't.

Reply:Nice.  Thanks!A Liberal is someone who lives in a gated community with private security,  but says that a boarder fence won't work and people don't need guns for self protection.

Reply:I would add this to the discussion here: "there's always more than one way to skin a cat"! That being said, there are many different industries that weld on stainless pipe and each one of these industries, their locations in our world, or in our country, often dictates the particular "style" that is applied to making these sorts of welds. I have seen lay-wire with gaps set-up less than the width of the filler wire, I have also seen the opened-up grooves where the wire diameter is under the size of the gap so that dabbing or some other form of manipulation of the wire is employed. Have also seen the wire fed from the inside through the groove to make the root pass. Each case has had supporting WPQR's/WPS's to verify and support the soundness of the technique employed. Whether you agree or not with this sort of thinking/action it is going on out there in the working world. My two tin pennies to add here. Best regards, Allanaevald
