Need to make a combo table for kitchen TV and fish tank that will go up against the wall. TV is light, fish tank will be close to 300 pounds with water in it. Doesn't need to be fancy wood, but don't want particle board either. Something like this but narrower and maybe a little cheaper:http://www.woodcraft.com/product/200...x-27-x-60.aspxI'd rather buy something instead of make it. My carpentry skills usually invlove building crude frames out of 2x4s.

Reply:Go to any real lumberyard and see what they have. Not Home Depot. Bring a big wallet with you. I made my fireplace mantle out of 5/4 x 12 x 96 red oak and that board cost me $130 10 years ago. Get a price on granite if you like that. May not be much more than wood if they have a remnant.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum

Reply:Most any lumber yard can get a slab of maple or oak butcher block for you. 60" is a common length, the 18" would be ripped from a 25" x 60" piece.

Reply:Lowe's stocks boards like that shown in the link except they're 3/4" thick. Just buy two and glue them together for the thickness you want. They aren't expensive.Last edited by hvw; 02-06-2014 at 12:23 PM.
Reply:Thanks for the suggestions guys. My thought is to do a mixed media piece (metal legs/frame and wood top) like I've seen some others do on here. Something like this, but with box tubing or angle for the frame/legs instead of pipe:I may have to check some of the woodworking forums - just trying not for the tabeltop to become a project of its own.I had to go to Lowe's for work this morning, so I swung by the lumber section while I was there. They've got some various sanded solid wood panels (16" being the closest to what I was looking for) that weren't too expensive. But they're thinner like hvw said. I could always slim the frame/legs down a little to stay proportional if I go with a thinner top.Ikea's got a solid beech top that's 61 x 29.5" x 1.125" - something like that may fit the bill:http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50106773/Also found this online:http://www.hardwood-lumber.com/store...FZBj7AoduzwAJgI'll have to call around to local lumber and carpentry places and see what I come up with there.Last edited by dbotos; 02-06-2014 at 12:49 PM.
Reply:I use the Ikea stuff all the time. It stains really well and looks great. Hard to beat for the price, esp if you have one semi locally.I don't mind wood working but I prefer to buy what I can and weld the rest.Regards,RobGreat Basin WeldingInstagramBlue weldersRed weldersMy luscious Table DIY TIG Torch cooler
Reply:That's pretty much my approach too. Here's a concept model with a 16" x 60" x 1.5" top. Frame is 1/4" with 2" wide legs would weigh about 50 pounds. Might need a brace underneath in the middle running in the short direction.

Reply:Well, this project has officially been killed in subcommitee. My wife pointed out that we could use more storage in the kitchen and I don't really have time to be getting into something with drawers or doors, so I gave in and agreed to buy something. At least it was made in Denmark and not in China:We may refinish the other piece (china cabinet) to match (in color at least). I also ended up getting a smaller tank than originally planned (20 gal instead of 29). Probably good since the 20 is well-proportioned to the TV (a 26"). Back glass of the tank has 3 coats of true blue acrylic paint on it - it's a medium blue, but the picture makes it look a little lighter.I may keep the mixed media table idea in my pocket for another project - my wife needs a sturdy, low table for her pottery wheel. |
