needle scaler

My Napa needle scaler finnally gave it up this morning.  I wish I could find the small parts I need for it.  The Napa parts line is busy.  I know Franz said he had some HF scalers that worked well.  Which models?
Reply:Hey S;HF has two, one costs about 63 bucks. the other is an attachment for a air chisel. I bought the attachment for fourteen bucks, and a cheap air chisel on sale for five bucks. I've used the dog snott out of it. and it seems to be holding up good, but for twenty bucks if it had lasted a couple of jobs I'd be happy.HF's sight seems to be down, I couldn't get on, or I'd give you the stock #'s. Reply:S the straight one that HF sells for around $65- is an exact copy of the IR needle scaler.  The only problem with it might be from the usual halfassed Chink heat treating.  The same unit from IRE is around $200-.The $14 attachemnt wirks well, till the needles break or the driver does, witch is generally about 10 hours of use.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:I've probably got close to a hundred hours on mine I've had Temp laborers scailing media seats  in a couple of travelling bridge filters, for about two weeks. I was impressed for twenty bucks
Reply:Well first it was the mag starter in one of the comps this morn,, got that going, then the scaler, now the fan in the puter needs some sewing machine oil.  Typical day.   I seen the scaler like Jim posted in Northern tool for 39.  Was jsut about to order one when I hear the other one running again.  My guy polished the anvil a bit and made a new flapper valve from plastic from anti freeze jug.  He has been running it for over half hr,, so far so good.  Later maybe I look for one on HF as It would be good to have spare or to toss on the truck.

Reply:Newb:             It's a tool used to knock the "Slag" off of a weldment. When you "Stick Weld" (SMAW) it leaves a crust like coating over the weld to protect it while it cools. You can either use a conventional "Chipping Hammer" or make life a lot easier and use a "Needle Scaler". Very good tool to have around if your doing a lot of Stick Welding.
Reply:As mentioned, removing weld slag. Scale flakey rust. Remove built up sludge on sewage pumps. And oh yes you can use it for peening a weld on cast iron.
Reply:And, they save considerable time on disk brake jobs, cleaning up the caliper and slide rails, as well as cleaning up the hubs on front wheel drive vehicles when replacing berarings.Only drawback, the damn things are LOUD!Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:I don't have the scaler attachment, but I have the air hammer. That little thing is like a beehive full of hornets on steroids!I have a heavy hitting I.R. hammer, but most of the time I prefer the H.F. I thought $9.99 was a good price for just the unit, but when I opened the box, I was surprised to see it included a few chisels, and even the air fitting. Later I saw it was on sale for $3.99!I bought another one.

Reply:I've had the privilege of using one in the Navy.  3rd loudest maintenance tool on the ship.  The second was the air venturis they'd use for space venting through large plastic tubes, and #1 was the deck crawler thing used to grind non-skid and paint off the decks.  Holy crap!!!  LOUD!
Reply:It's a 6 year old posting from 2004 but likely worth resurrecting.  I want to share how pleased I was when I purchased and used mine this week.This is a great tool to have in your shop.Available from Princess Auto (Canada) and Harbor Freight (USA) from $13 to $40, a solid investment in a unique and useful tool.I bought the attachment-type that threads onto the threaded nose of any air chisel gun.  I had only a small gun but that turned out to be perfect.Here's a close up of the needles - look like 3/32 inch diameter rods - 18 of them on this unit.With my small air gun, it did a nice job cleaning up an old rusty/oxidized weld - without dinging the surface much.  Likes about 90 psi at 10 cfm to run continuously but I used it intermittently with 4 cfm.Mounted on a more powerful air chisel gun, the needle gun attachment would be useful to remove thicker rust (mill scale)... as seen on the tv show TANK OVERHAUL.  My main use for this will be thoroughly cleaning the slag off my stick welds.A good tool to consider adding to your collection.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet

Reply:Here is a good site for air and other tool parts. Most of the parts on the in line scalers are interchangeable I have found.I always tried to work with the oldest hand on the job to gain knowlege but now I can't find any.
