I took my first lesson on stick with my new to me , purchase of miller Dialarc HF. Took a few times to get and keep it lit. I just know I am going to forget to pull my helmet down, and get arc flashed, so , what shade for goggles or safety glasses with side shields, to lessen a totally unprotected arc flash. I want to train myself to use this type of helmet, and once I can buy a really good and comfy AD hood, will go looking. Does the fibre metal pipeliner hood have a glass lense?I have seen many posts that say folks like a glass lense instead of plastic. I also need to wear my 200 eyeglasses to really see the detail, am I better off getting a cheater lense, or is that plastic, thereby negating the glass lense. Would also like to wear a miller half mask or 3m with p2297 or p100. Any help and guidance is deeply appreciated. Thanks ,Raf
Reply:I just gave away my Pipe liner hood to a kid I was helping with a project. My neck can’t take the weight due to an on the job injury in 1994. Now I just use a Huntsman 411P, it’s a lot lighter. When welding with wire feed or SMAW I use a plastic cover lens out front, and a glass cover lens next to my eyes. If Tig welding I use glass out front. Few years ago I switched to the ArcOne auto lens, really clear. I can’t wear cheaters, they give me double vision, because I lost the center vision in my right eye when I was 12-years old, so I wear dollar store reading glasses. Reply:I vote for the Pipeliner, I have 3 because of great deals found. CEP, that looks like the hood I was given to use on that pipe job. My buddy was over a week before, and he thought it was lighter than my Pipeliner. We could not feel the difference. Then, he got cocky and said my hood will melt and his won't. Well, my hood didn't melt and he has a notch burned into the side!!! They're both nice hoods, but I like the kinda crappy headgear on my hood better than the crappier headgear on the Fibremetal's.Do you have any close up's of exactly what you used to replace the bolts on the Pipeliner?"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:i wear a pipeliner with phillips safety "athermal" lens (20$ at amazon for lens) and love it. tig and stick it is awesome in shade 11 but a little dark for me for short-circuit migi have to wear hard-hat adapter at work so for play i wear a 35$ home depot lincoln hood with a big glass lens that came with it; that way i dont have to switch out head-gear on the pipeliner.the only complaint i have with the "cheap" hood is that the right side tension nob loosens after a few flips and annoys me a little bit.basic huntsman is semi-retired. great hood but lets my neck burn if im not wearing my beard.miller elite is retired and hangs in the garage, still functional with super-glued headgear. great hood also, but i have grown to dislike ad hoods, even if it is the bestbosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:I've got an old large window Jackson Shadow that I started with and a few other assorted hoods I've picked up over the years as spare/loaner hoods. Most important thing with a fixed hood is comfort, as you can stick any good lens in any fixed hood that takes that size.I've got maybe 6 or 8 different lenses that I was trying back when I was looking for the best shade for my fixed shade hood as a back up. A lot of guys like the gold lenses. I haven't used one enough yet to form a good opinion on it other than it's at least a quality unit. Can't say yet whether it's better than the other ones or not yet.Safety glasses... Since I have to wear glasses full time as I'm near sighted, my standard "work" glasses are prescription safety glasses. There are any number of different ones I could have gotten, but the ones I picked are a wrap around style with a foam gasket that seals fairly well to the face, Down side is I have had it fog a bit more than my older pair if I'm going in and out between the heat and the cold. Not a huge deal, something I'm familiar with from wearing glasses. I will say that a few years back I found that my normal driving prescription would no longer work for me while welding. I found I needed to look over the lenses to see well. I had my eye doc set me up with a intermediate set of "work" glasses. They aren't quite as strong as my driving glasses are, but are still strong enough I could drive with them if need be. Last year I started to notice the same issues again, so I got a new prescription. This one won't let me drive, but is good for welding and I can still see reasonably walking around in the shop wearing them. Next pair probably will be bifocals though if things continue as they are. Investing in a good pair of prescription safety glasses if need be is a worth while investment..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Thanks DSW,92dixman,stick-man, and CEP,For some good opinions from you guys.   It seems like the Pipeliner wins my vote. To be clear, stick-man, do you mean the crappier fibre metal Huntsman or Pipeliner. Are they both fibremetal. North or honeywell pipeliner, or are they the same. Amazon has all of them, just 10.00 difference or so. Thanks. Again,Raf
Reply:Only hood I have really....I do have a cheap auto dark, that I bought when someone on here told everyone that Harbor Freight had them on sale for I think $15.  I will say I've never had my eyes burnt with it, but I'm so used to the pancake (about 25 yrs now...) that I use it even in the shop most of the time.  I thought the AD hood had quit working, but I think maybe it just doesn't have enough sensors for TIG maybe...-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion

Reply:Welcome to welding with your own machine. Many hoods that use the standard large size lens can be retro fitted to some of the AD lenses at a later date saving you a few bucks in the future if that's of concern to you. Some hoods will take a cheater lens with out an additional adapter and some will require an adapter. Cheater lenses are available in plastic and glass. The "really cool hood" that handtpipe is styling for you is called a pancake hood and fits on your face like a pair of goggles, negating the possibility of wearing safety glasses or any other glasses. Also with the pancake hood you put the hood over your eyes then find the weld zone in the dark, if that makes any sense. I don't know if a pancake will take a cheater or not. Good luck with your search and please note that the pipeliner hood is available with a ratchet head gear and a band style. Make sure you are ordering what you want as a new headgear is 1/2 the price of a hood.
Reply:I like my Jackson HSL-100 ... it's almost as light as the 411P at about half the price. And it has really good, easy- and cheap-to-replace headgear.

Reply:I'd go with the fibre metal pipeliner with ratchet headgear.I wear my respirator and safety glasses under it often. If you want it to be auto-darkening, get that $50 arc one lens that CEP posted...Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Reply:I use a huntsman 951p with a gold lens. I have three of them, two with 10 shade for tig/stick (one in the truck and one in the shop) and one with 12 for mig/dual shield , I use all three pretty regularly. The most important part of a fixed shade hood is the mechanism that holds the hood open/closed. The huntsman hinge mechanism is WAY better than anything else I have tried.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:Which model of pipeliner hood does not need an adapter for glass cheater lense? Thanks again,Raf
Reply:In my opinion, the FibreMetal Pipeliner headgear is just ok. The Huntsman fiber hood's headgear I liked less than the Pipeliner. At least the one I used. I had to have it soooo tight, it gave me a headache. Jackson has one of the best headgear's out there. Thanks CEP. Yep, I gotta do that!"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:My pipeliner has the rubber band head gear and I really like it, it always seems to feel just right not too tight and not too loose

Reply:Raf... Just a few I found. I will admit I had to dig for a few minutes, but not excessively long. Reply:My biggest gripe I have with most hoods is the headgear won't open far enough for my big head of 7-5/8" hat size.  Usually I'm lucky to get one or two clicks of adjustment and even then it's too tight.  I like to add the wool forehead pads instead of the usual foam ones.  They last longer and don't tend to stink as much after a while.  I have a pair of Jackson hoods that I've been using a while.  One is a lightweight model but I never use it because it's cut down too much and won't shade my neck.  I've been meaning to add a leather bib to it which will obviate the weight savings. My second biggest gripe is manufacturers that put stickers inside the hoods.  Working outside it's not an issue, in the shop, with reflective walls and you have a glossy paper mirror to shine that reflected UV into your face while trying to weld unless you take a few minutes to remove the well affixed sticker and glue.I prefer a fixed shade hood, though lately I've been using an AD for tacking.  Usually the optical quality is better and the price is definitely more inviting.  I've found the cheap AD hoods and midrange ones aren't that different.  One thing I wish they made was a cheap fixed shade hood or even AD for that matter that can be worn over a half face respirator.
