What is in the bottle?

My friend gave me a welding bottle the other day. He has had the bottle for years and said it was full. He thought that it was for tig welding but was not sure. There are no markings other than the color. The tank is orange with a gray stripe between the shoulder and valve. Do the color markings tell you anything. Thanks Dennis

Reply:....Picture of CGA Valve would be great.! and color usually never tells you what it is. Sometimes the color of the bottle is always argon for say praxair, and green is oxygen. But it is always different!If it has external threads it will be a oxygen CGA-540 and i believe that Co2 is CGA-320. Acetylene however has internal threads and is CGA-510. CGA-580 is argon. Reply:Have ya considered carefully filling a balloon (no just a small one) then heading outside and putting a flame to it?  Would really narrow things down.  Not flammable, then you know what you don't have..... Flammable material and you could figure out pretty easy if it's oxygen, acetylene. Just a thought.
Reply:580 is nitrogen, argon, helium, xenon, krypton, tetrafluoromethane and mixes of any of them as well. TIG is most likely argon but without a sticker or something on the cylinder it's hard to tell what's inside it if it has a CGA 580 fitting.

Reply:Usually that sticker will tell you whats supposed to be in the bottle, the band makes me think it could be med gas or a special mix however cylinder color coding is not standardized.
