I need a light 2x4 hood with a flip front. I really like my pipeliner and might just order the sellstrom adapter or cut up an old tigerhood and rivet it, but sellstrom sells a similar hood to the pipeliner the sellstrom 280. The 280 is nylon not fiberglass and would save me 20 bucks. Does anyone have any experience with the 280 or a hood of the same material?
Reply:I could have sworn I heard that Sellstrom doesn't carry that flip front anymore. The one Fieldres used in his video. If you find them, please let us know."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:The Sellstrom 280 looks almost identical to the cheap Hobart flip front... including cheap plastic head gear. I would always pick pipeliner above anything... so try to mod yours.

Reply:Pretty much.  I had one as a spare but wound up using for sand blasting.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:I bought 4 from sellstromI emailed them with that part number. Very very very very good customer service, fast shipping a high quality part. Only problem I have with the front flip is that it is HEAVY..... Especially with a glass lens. You will notice the weight of the flip front when you drop the hood. But I still love it on my pipelinerLocal 83
Reply:Why doesn't Fibre-metal make a pipeliner flip-front option, so we don't have to chop-n-hack one up ourselves???  Wouldn't they sell if the pipeliner model came that way from the factory???  I would think so.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:Call Patricia (Sellstrom CSR) @ 800-323-7402 ext 240.  Order P/N 27400 ("S" Front Lift Retainer) at $21ea.  Patricia's an angel and knows customer relations.  Easy day."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:I like my Jackson/Huntsman 490P slide lens hood. Made out of some kind of fiberboard paper substance, light as a feather.

Reply:The Huntsman is a great hood too. I used one throughout school.
Reply:Flip up from an old jackson pipeliner. The Jackson's heavy and headgear sucks. Flip up bolts right up to the pipeliner with the original lens holder cut out. Attached Images
Reply:Well just ordered the sellstrom flip front adapter the other day. I am still waiting on delivery but would recommend everyone look for an alternative. The product ended up costing $41 from sellstron over the phone. They put on a $5 handling fee and charged $15 dollars freight shipping. Kinda crazy. I'll update upon arrival.
Reply:Before you take the chain saw to your hood you might want to look at the Jackson HSL2 with the 370 suspension. The suspension is more adjustable and robust than most, has a flip up lens and can be found online for about $40 shipped if you shop a little, and you will still have your old hood as a back up if you don't like the new one.

Reply:I put the Selstrom flip up assembly in a Fibre Metal Pipeliner. It works good. Kinda heavy compaired to the Futura hood I have been using the last three years. I wish Fibre Metal would mould the Futura flip up into the Pipeliner. The Futura is very thin. I doesn't stick out very far. I ordered the Selstrom 280. Should be here Thursday. Sarge's or one if the others has started making a flip up pancake. One Step Ahead Of The Home Owners Association.
Reply:I use the sellstrom mod on my pipeliner. Now I wouldnt weld with anything less. I even got the flip front kit from wendy's for my pancake. Im a flip front addict.Sellstrom has customer service nailed. Very good experience every time I call. Granted I live about 20 miles from their offices so I dont have to pay a billion dollars in shipping....Local 597

Super easy to deal with.

Reply:That would be nice, I'm loveing this so far. I will say the flip is kind of heave compared to a normal pipeliner.

Reply:@ SuperArc - images of my PipeLiner mod completed a few months prior.  Indexed/scalloped the helmet's top surface/edge to allow the lid to go UP beyond 90deg.  Also, chopped 1in of the lower surface to prevent throat impact during "downs".  Key requirements.  Job req'd ~ 30min using a air-powered cutoff wheel and hand tools.  Easy day.  The WHITE, loaded with a Phillips #11 Gold Glass Lense, is my GoTo for SMAW-GMAW-GTAW.  The GREY #21, a 1949 PipeLiner edition with a #12 Gold Phillips is in standby reserve.   Attached ImagesLast edited by ManoKai; 07-05-2014 at 03:54 PM."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:ManoKai, that's fantastic!  Notching out the top is a great thing too, especially since the helmet gets a little heavier in the front with the Sellstrom mod.  All of your edges on your helmet look really nice and smooth.  I will be cutting the bottom edge of my Pipeliner too. I can't stand the throat gouging, nor the fact that when leaning over the welding table, I can't see out the window too well.   I said it before but I really wish Fibre-Metal (Honeywell) would modernize their helmets in this day and age.  If they offered a model with an already built-in flip front and a pre-trimmed top and bottom, how cool would that be?  I'm sure it would out sell their existing Pipeliner model.   They could call the new model the "Pipeliner-II."     I thought about using a Dremel tool to make the cuts because I can have more hand control while cutting into the helmet.  Plus, it will make me feel like the "mad scientist" playing with dental drills on my victim!  Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:Hey Darlington,   I showed my young'ns your helmet and they immediately recognized it as a "minion."  They thought it was the coolest thing in town!

Reply:Friend gave me his Hobart flip front when he went AD.The tab that opens the flip Front is too small, hard to find even with light gloves. My favorite helmet is the Lincoln   fiberglass that came with my 225s welder.Needs a new headgear now.
