What real world application would need S-6 for TIG filler?
Reply:S-6 filler rod has a higher silicon content than S-3.  Silicon is a de-oxidizer and makes the weld puddle more fluid.  In theory, S-6 solid wire should handle surface contamination better, and wet out easier.  In reality, the welder shouldn't be welding over mill scale or other contaminants when TIG or MIG welding, so this isn't much of a real world benefit.  The more fluid puddle should allow higher travel speeds at the same amperage, all other things being equal.  S-6 for out of position pipe welding is a slight disadvantage, because the more fluid puddle wants to sag more easily on the vertical and overhead portion of a pipe weld.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:Thanks Dab. I had a hard time believing a WPS would call for S-6 to cover for lack of prep so it must be the need for fluidity.
Reply:Actually in this side of the pond, S-6 is far more popular than S-2 or S-3.Personally (and most welders I know) I find it a lot easier when doing root passes.
