Reply:That appears to be some sort of mandrel or other. Is there anything on the other side of the headstock? Look at the largest ring closest to the headstock in the picture. I see holes, are there fasteners of some sort recessed in those holes, if there are that's where I would start.Ranger 250 GXTSmith Gas Axe
Reply:Put in the lowest gear that it has..(NOT running)..Insert spanner wrench of proper fit into holes on chuck..Tap counterclockwise with hammer......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:holes are .5 OD and they go down about 1/2" then dead end......the spanner and ccw sounds about right, but i have been beating on the thing and it does not move, i would have to make a better tool to grip it better, but i don't want to break anything just in case it does not have right hand threads. are ya sure it have R.H. threads????

Reply:Now i'm getting more confused...The holly wheel is called a spindle lock, in order to take off the arbor thing on there, i have to unlock the holly wheel? which has right hand threads,,I will give it hell again.......
Reply:o.k. them pictures helped a lot, I still have not got it but i know what i'm doing now......I THINK
Reply:I agree with post 2; it appears to have a collet closer which might be putting pressure on the headstock tightening 'nut'. I'd like to see the other end of the headstock to see if you have a handwheel or lever which needs to be removed first; then you can remove the collet adapter and all.
Reply:No, the ring has to be turned clockwise to remove the chuck. The threads on the chuck are right hand. I know it sounds backwards, but it isn't. I have one of these lathes. If you are standing at the tailstock, looking at the headstock, the ring must spin clockwise.
