Hello, im just wondering if the duty cycle on the SMAW welder im looking at is enough. The electrodes i will be using are 7018 1/8 inch and 6013 1/8 inch. I will be doing small projects in our garage mostly on 1/4 inch-3/8 inch plate steel. the duty cycle on the machine is 20% @ 180 amps. i also need to know approximatley what the max capabilities of the machine are.
Reply:Its got plenty of power for the 1/4'' steel with the Lincoln brand 1/8'' 7018AC rod. With my cheap 6th hand AC stick welder I will use 1/8'' rod on 1/4'' thick steel turned up to around 110 to 130 amps.It should run as many rods as you want as long as the fan is working while on that lower setting.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:Should it handle 6013 1/8 inch good too then???

Reply:A campbell hausfeld 225 AC stick welder.
Reply:Junk. You can find Lincoln, Miller, and Century buzz-boxes on Craigslist, sometimes under $100 for an AC machine. Not much to go wrong in them so don't be afraid to buy used.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:Thank you, you just answered the next question i was going to ask. I know lincoln is a high quality company so is miller. But i do have a question. The used ones you are talking about, do you think that they would work well for the situations i discussed on the original post of this thread
Reply:for reference when looking at a machine the duty cycle is how long it will weld at that setting for 10 mins. So that machine will weld for 2 minutes at 180 amps and require 8 minutes to cool. higher duty cycle is better, but not necessary- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com
