Anyone Else Do This???

I cut my filler rod down to 18" for several reasons. In a small garage 18" is easier to handle that 36" also I keep my filler rod in a tool box. I got tired of getting too close to the arc and throwing away small bits of filler rod that still had some use. I came by this mechanical pencil and use it to hold filler rod. Another choice would be a tungsten holder. I can get down to about an inch on the filler rod using this. Currently using this with 3/32 filler wire.
Reply:Pretty slick idea, I typically just go until my fingers burn lol. Then throw the small piece in the scrap metal bin

Reply:I cut the tig rods down to to help someone in the shop from accidentally getting poked with a 36" rod if they happen to walk up while im welding. I just feed the rod in my hand till theres only about 1.5" left and toss it in the scrap bend

Reply:I just feed wire with my fingers, when my gloves start smoking and fingertips burn I throw the rest away. At $2.55LB for ER70S2 I don't mind tossing a little away if it saves time.
