Almost finished, will have some panel sliders that extend up the sides of the truck (1.5" x .095 DOM) Attached Images'14 HTP invertig 221Thermal Arc 201ts'15 HTP 2400'13 Hypertherm Powermax 30Esab 875Esab 251Clark Metal Servicespecializing in stainless steel exhaust systems

Reply:integrated hitch, should be good for 7500lbs, will be hidden behind license plate. makes for better departure angles without the hitch hanging 5" below the bumper.'14 HTP invertig 221Thermal Arc 201ts'15 HTP 2400'13 Hypertherm Powermax 30Esab 875Esab 251Clark Metal Servicespecializing in stainless steel exhaust systems
Reply:So, the marker plate is not viewable when the hitch is in use?    not a big deal, I guess...  But I have seen cops bust balls for that.      Like the folks with 8 bicycles racked to the back of their car blocking the marker plate. bumper looks great thought... Reply:yes, the plate will be flipped up during hitch use. but, its what the customer wanted. This is not my design, he gave me a pic of a bumper he liked and asked for a pirated version. Some tube bumpers look good, but not many, I don't know what people think sometimes! I like plate bumpers but I prefer them with alot of angles. this one is border like too straight line for me, but it still looks good (maybe i'm bias because I built it). There will be some tubing sliders added to the side today. Then it will be finished'14 HTP invertig 221Thermal Arc 201ts'15 HTP 2400'13 Hypertherm Powermax 30Esab 875Esab 251Clark Metal Servicespecializing in stainless steel exhaust systems
Reply:yeah i agree, the angles are the way to go, makes it look "tuff" i guess, or more clean instead of some boxed up plate welded together so someone can say they have a custom bumper.....lol see that alot on CL trucks for sale "bada$$ custom bumper" and they think they can get more money, and all it is, is a rectangle tube bumper or a piece of 4in pipe lol. yuckMiller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication

Reply:here are the panel sliders installed. included is a pic of how I will occasionally scarf tubing. The tubing is 1.5"x.095 DOM, those are blue point (snap on) aviation hand shears. I cut up to .063 321 stainless steel sheet/tube with them regularly without much fuss. The .095 DOM takes a bit of muscle, but it gets the job done.***what are you guys using for notchers? I think I'm going to buy one as I am starting to branch out and do alot of heavier wall off road fab type stuff, Leaning towards a JDM or JD2 Attached ImagesLast edited by sausage450r; 02-23-2014 at 02:16 AM.'14 HTP invertig 221Thermal Arc 201ts'15 HTP 2400'13 Hypertherm Powermax 30Esab 875Esab 251Clark Metal Servicespecializing in stainless steel exhaust systems
Reply:I've been using a $150 joint jigger for 10 years now and I highly recommend it. Simple, cheap, small and compact...you can't beat this thing. Best feature is that there's no need to mount and have to bring you're work to it...just bring it to you're work...slide it on...tighten clamp and notch. I've gotten 100 notchings out of a $15 Lennox hole saw. No need to get expensive and fancy for the occasional project. Shank bushings are fully and easily replaceable...(I've done mine twice over a decade). Nice little tool.      Oh yea...sweet bumper by the way!http://www.jointjigger.com/POVERTY...is the Mother of InventionMillermatic 211Millermatic 140Miller Thunderbolt XLArcOne 100STS inverter w/TIGThermal Dynamics 38XL Victor Oxy/AcetyleneJancy Slugger Holemaker IIJet 5x6 BandsawNever enough time & sleep.
Reply:Nice looking bumper.  I agree plate looks way better than tube. Here are a couple I have done. But they were pretty easy.  Customer did the CAD drawings and had them cnc plasma cut.  I just had to fit and stick em together.    Esab Caddy Mig C200iThermal Arc 186HTP Microcut 625
Reply:That front bumper is sweet but that taco doesnt have enough tire to support it(not talking about weight)...big tires would make that bumper look right at homeI like the side bars too nice additionMiller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication

Reply:That is really nice.  I am just starting on a rockcrawler suzuki project and have been debating with my friend on tools.  We are both trying to learn metal fab in our garage.  He is building a tube notcher, tube bender, horizontal bandsaw, press, plasma cutter, mill, lathe, etc.  I am telling him for the one bend and one notch he could have done it by hand faster.  He is on week 2 of building the bender to make one shock hoop and I have been giving him stuff on how to do it much simpler.  Now I see you did all this with sheers makes me think I am on the right track.Couple of questions for you, my first project is going to be a plate front bumper with winch built into it.  I was going to build a prototype out of wood/cardboard then trace on to the metal.  He is trying to convince me to learn CAD so I can do the prototype on paper.  How did you do this one?  And what metals did you use, my plan is to maybe use mild steel 2x4 for the main support then plate off of it to like 1/4".  Later on the exo cage will be built off the bumper also.  I will not be doing any comps so don't need to meet any strict regs or anything.  I know most people use DOM but another fab friend told me if I don't need to pass any inspections I can get away with mild steel if I double the thinkness or double the diameter.  And its only a 2000 pound vechile stock so not as heavy as some of the other crawlers out there. Also any tips on the fab part for a beginner.  All I have is a oxy/act welder but have access to TIG, Stick, and MIG.  I will be welding directly to the frame so that will not be GAS welded but hoping to build the majority of it in the garage then take to friends house to weld on frame with a better process.
Reply:Let your friend get all the tools. Nothing is better than having a friend with lots of cool tools for you to use   As far as THIS particular bumper, I was given a pic of something my customer wanted me to copy. I measured up the back of his truck, sat down with some graph paper, and drew it out. from there by looking at the pictures and my measurements, I was able to get a rough Idea of measurements of what was in the picture. I laid them out in cardboard put it on the truck and taped it together. When satisfied with that, I cut it all out of 3/16" CR steel sheet with a plasma cutter. As far as tooling, Mig is a must Miller 180 or better is nice. I have a millermatic 200 I bought as a basket case cheap (250$), A little investigation, and help from weldingweb.com input, and its working great. Alot of my friends fab, we all own JD2 model 3 benders. We pool our die sets, and consult each other before buying, that way we have a wide range of dies between all of us. The Mounts I made from .250 4x3 angle iron, the intergrated hitch from .250 2.5x2.5 square. supports out of .375 2x2 angle.when it comes to your exo cage, you can use 1.75 x .120 wall mild steel, alot of sandcars and such are built from it. structurally, hand bending may be a hindrance on your roll cage structure. A nice smooth, unwrinkled or flatspotted bend is important to the structure. Bend radius also is a big factor, you don't want to go too tight. the bigger the radius, typically the better. My biggest tip for fabbing, expecially a bumper or cage. The second you start second guessing something you did, STOP. Fix it now, because you quadruple your work to fix it later. When you have 30hrs, design and fab into a bumper or cage, its extremely disappointing once finished, if you wish you did something different.Any questions, feel free to PM.Get yourself a decent mig welder, angle grinder, Sawzalls are real handy, a bench grinder can be useful for notching and such (can use a angle grinder).'14 HTP invertig 221Thermal Arc 201ts'15 HTP 2400'13 Hypertherm Powermax 30Esab 875Esab 251Clark Metal Servicespecializing in stainless steel exhaust systems
Reply:When doing a winch bumper, Mounts, and winch mount plate (main structure of bumper) should be out of .250Here is a bumper I built for my WJ, you can see how i mocked up my design with cardboard ( I went though probably 6 designs before I settled on one)Still haven't mounted this, as i've been so busy with work (so I don't have any finished photos), now that I have a slow period its effin raining! hasn't rained in months, effin California always finding a way to screw me! Reply:Those are some great looking bumpers you guys made.  That will be my second decent project when it finally warms up here (IN/OH line). I have a feeling mine will end up being square tubing though.  I've got an 89 Toyota pickup for work.  It's just a 2wd ext, 4 banger.  It's great for a work truck though.  I give it decent maintenance but not much loving and it just keeps on going.  The guy I bought it from had a hitch ball mounted in the bumper and must have hooked up to something awful heavy, because it's bent down and looks crappy.  I'm just wanting something light duty with a receiver big enough for a small utility trailer.

I'm ready to start doing my own thing, but I have a good thing going where I work now, and I really respect my employers. He has mentored me to where I am today, and they take real good care of me. I guess I have a sense of duty to them. Right now I am happy offsetting my income at home, but I'd really like to have my own shop, doing my own thing. I enjoy doing truck stuff, but to be honest, its alot of work for the amount of money to be made.  If you know anyone who wants anything made, I am making bids. but I am not ready to focus on any one market right now. I know the direction I want to go in, but I have a few more of the higher end tools I need to get to be able to do it right first. I have a mortgage and 2 kids, so I am working on having a zero debt/overhead start up within a few years, and probably in AZ, rather than CA. CA agencies are comming down really hard on us in the manuf. industry right now, they are chasing us all into other states
