I had a customer call me up to repair a boom arm on an excavator.   "It was cracked" i was told. Well you can be the judge.

Reply:Haha yup thats my favorite line!"Just need a quick weld"Well this one took a bit more than that. That is 5/16" thick wall and 3/4" bottom plate. That took some serious power to break like that. This customer is a big outfit though and wants things done right which is good because thats not a " quick weld".
Reply:please do tell how they managed to break the boom off? I also own a track hoe, and wow do they ever have hydraulic power, loaded semi full of grain burried in the mud, hook onto the front and just use the boom, pull that semi anywhere you want!

Apparently the Case reps came out and just kind of scratched there heads and said " we recommend ....uh .....you should get that repaired". Sounds like they where even a bit perplexed on how that could have happened.
Reply:Poor terminology , it's really a ''HAIRLINE " crack !  and yea,

Reply:I fixed one similar to that a few years back. I cut it off completely, welded a 12" sleeve that would fit inside the boom to the sleeve, slid it inside the boom, welded up the split and fish plated it outside, only took a couple of hours LOL If I remember right the original weld wasn't so hot on the sides of the sleeve, not much penetration.....Mike

Reply:Hard to tell from the pic. But that looks like the boom / stick connection on a offset hoe / excavator ...like a JD 70-DLooking at the bottom of the boom first picLooks like the bottom weld broke at the pivot pointLots of stress there when you dig.. The boom pushes down and the stick pulls out... Like breaking a wish boneLast pic looks like a small amount of the weld is still bonded to the pivot tube but most is still on the boom plateI hope I am right or I am going to sound like a complete idiotSent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2Backed my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:OMG!No problem!I got some 5/32" 6013 and will do it for $45!HAHAHAHA!
Reply:Just use a copper backup, and fill it in with mig.The weld on the bottom of the round tube has a bunch of cold overlap, you can see it to the right of the break. Looks like that was where the problem started.Last edited by walker; 02-19-2014 at 10:49 AM.
Reply:I think they had a "crack" in the floor at that Corvette museum too.

Reply:I think a crack means its still hanging on the machine . Broken is 2 or more pieces which may or may not be missing . This may take a few posts. These are the " repair steps " Took a combination of dogs, wedges, come alongs, few big hammers, rosebuds and a little patients but got it damn close to straight. Welded a plate inside to reinforce it all and give a backing for the weld build up
Reply:Root pass on the top pin and fish plate fit up and root on the sides.
Reply:Welded out and ready for paint!
Reply:The small stabilizer was allot smoother sailing. Just made a new piece 5/16" to fit the profile and cut, grind and weld.
Reply:Final weld out and put on a diamond plate for reinforcement. All in all pretty happy with the end result. It pinned up (a bit tight getting it all together) but everything is working how it should.
Reply:Looks very nice. What dual shield wire are you running?
Reply:TMW,Awesome repair on all counts. I have a question if you dont mind, and please dont take this the wrong way because i dont know much at all about equipment repair like what you just us; and by all counts im a newbie...On the fish plate that you put on the boom, it looks like you have 90 degree corners down by the pin...I was under the impression that 90 degree corners on plates like this arent advisable because of the potential for cracking (That being said, the boom was just about destroyed lol). So is there a reason you did it this way? lack of options? or did you radius the corners and im just not seeing it?Ok, so thats more like three questions...Anyway, schools in session and ears are open, would love to learn why.

Reply:Originally Posted by TMW llcThanks!Thats a good observation. If the plate was a tight fit I would have gone that route. Since there was a 1/4" inch plus gap and had backing behind the joint the corners are not an issue.  We have done many plates this way and have never had an issue with it.

Reply:Thanks guys! Glad to post it up. I take pics of most everything we do. Primarily to document things for the customer. Also helps if there is any sticker shock. Lets people see whats involved in the so called "quick weld". Cheers!

Reply:They definitely brought in the right guy, good job. The photo sequence is great, especially the images showing how you drew it back into place with the draw bolt and wedges. This is where the art and experience show. These are the kind of photos are what make this site great because we can all learn a new trick or two. Looks like you were able to bring this back to your shop rather than repairing onsite. That's always nice. Thanks for posting.
