I am completely self taught and have been welding for years but it has always been a small part of my business. I was wondering if there is somewhere I can find something like a "welder's dictionary"? I am enjoying reading the forum but lacking a formal welding education, I am not getting the full benefit of what I'm reading. Specifically I'm looking for information on positions 3g, 6g etc. and what they apply to. Is it just pipe or do they apply to all welding? Also I'm interested in finding some information on becoming certified. The information I have found seems kind of confusing/daunting because it seems like there is a cert for every process, metal and position. How do I sort through all of them?

Reply:I have two good textbooks to refer to. You are asking about a lot of information. I do not weld on anything with any sort of specs or that has been engineered other than by myself and have not taken a test in years, I am pretty rusty about some of the terms these real proficient professionals use too. I would say a good book is worth it's cost. The ones that come to mind are that I would have are Welding Skills and Modern Welding I think. There are plenty of useful charts and technical information that is easy to look up quickly and hard or impossible to remember for me. Hope this helps you. Amazon probably would have both of these and one of everything else.SA-250 TMDSquarewave 200Thunderbolt AC/DC1951 G.E. welder
Reply:Positions apply to plate, or pipe. Both use similar numbers, but they mean different things.G stands for grove welds, F would stand for fillets. In plate 1 denotes flat, 2 horizontal, 3 vertical and 4 overhead. 2 G would be a horizontal groove weld, 4F would be an overhead fillet. These might help.Attachment 1114651.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Thanks for the replies y'all. Insaneride that's a great diagram. Is there somewhere I can look for the definitions of the abbreviations? DSW, thanks for the explanation of the positions, it really helped.Last edited by LMREESE; 05-20-2015 at 09:49 PM.
