This is a round bale spear recently completed. It's fabricated to attach to the loader arms after the bucket is removed. Top fits down over pins located on the arms and the bottom has pins which fit into sockets then take lynch pins to hold it on. Probably guess by the colors what make tractor it is headed for. Everything made from scratch. This one has a 2 1/2" solid 1045 steel main spear and 1 3/8" solid stabilizers. I usually try not to use stabilizers on a loader spear but client required them. Main frame is 3 1/2" Square 1/4" wall tubing with 1/2x4 end plates.Ready for delivery to customer.Al Attached ImagesA man is judged by what's between his legs...always ride a good horseMiller DialArc HFLincoln Classic 300DThermal Arc 181iPowermax 45Scotchman Ironworker(2) BridgeportsOkomota Surface GrinderAutoCAD 2010
Reply:glad to see you put the main spear through the cross member. Built a spear for the FFA teacher back in highschool. they just had be weld the spear onto a plate. the first attempt failed the first try. didn't even get the bail of the ground. round two involved beveled spear, and gussets. to my knowledge, it's still in use 10+ years later. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Looks good and all from scratch is nice. 2-1/2" spear... you'll likely never bend or break it. Nice paint
Reply:I always run the spear through. Probably overkill to weld botch sides but I do it. Only takes a minute. This spear was turned down to 2 1/4" at the end so it fits up to a shoulder. This one should last until eternity since it's going on a smaller tractor and probably never see anything over 800-900 pound bales. We sometimes get them up to 2200 pounds so kind of in the habit of building them strong. And yeah my first attempt at a bale spear was an over engineered monstrosity that lasted a while. Until I hit some hard ruts one winter and bounced a 2000 pound bale a little too much. Made quite a mangled mess.  The paint job is my own original idea. I  might have seen something like it once befiore but I can't remember where.  A man is judged by what's between his legs...always ride a good horseMiller DialArc HFLincoln Classic 300DThermal Arc 181iPowermax 45Scotchman Ironworker(2) BridgeportsOkomota Surface GrinderAutoCAD 2010
Reply:Just because it's a small tractor, doesn't mean they aren't going to try. case in point, people who treat the max weight load on a trailer as a challenge to beat, and not a number to avoid. There are no problems. Reply:Very nice SmokinPRanch! Did you buy the spear? If not, whats the easiest way to sharpen 2 1/2" round stock?"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I go out to look, and the spike is bent down at a 90 degree angle at the gusset.  Seems that the hydraulic valve stuck while he was driving down a frozen dirt road and he tried to pole vault a 70 horse JD tractor.   I overbuild everything for the ranch ,because even then it might not be strong enough for what can and has happened.

Reply:I quit making spears years ago. The forged spears go into the bales easier and it's cheaper for me to buy the good ones than to make them. As for quality it's like everything else. The made in china models aren't as good as the ones that come from Italy. I've straightened more than a few of the china ones but to be fair it's usually do to being stuck into the ground when nothing is going to work. I've had to straighten a few of the good ones and it always scares me. They tend to break instead of bend.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:Irish, If you got a source for pretty good spears let me know I'd like to look into them. I might also farm the turning out to a client I do design work for since he has some bigger lathes and some cnc equipment.Depending what the costs would be since I'm trying to to keep the price down somewhat. Just amazes me the prices they are charging on the internet for some flimsy looking rigs. I built this one for pretty much Chinese prison labor rates. I wanted to use it as a model for setting up some tooling and also as a sort of word of mouth advertising. I had the materials on hand. I also asked the client not to tell anyone what they paid for it.  Hopefully it will develop some future work.AlA man is judged by what's between his legs...always ride a good horseMiller DialArc HFLincoln Classic 300DThermal Arc 181iPowermax 45Scotchman Ironworker(2) BridgeportsOkomota Surface GrinderAutoCAD 2010
Reply:Well I'm not sure about getting the one big spear. I prefer to use the twin spears myself. The ones I've gotten in the past I got from KJD Enterprises. It's been a few years since I've had to get any but the last set cost me about $150 with sockets but they had me setup as a dealer then.http://www.kdloaders.com/  These are a fairly common high quality aftermarket loader found around here.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

Reply:If I could get good quality strong spears for around 75 bucks or under I'd go that route for sure. Never thought of checking with JD...they usually don't come to mind when thinking lower cost. Hopefully this will be come a real problem. Enough orders that I have to find a high volume supplier. I sure enough appreciate all the help guys.AlA man is judged by what's between his legs...always ride a good horseMiller DialArc HFLincoln Classic 300DThermal Arc 181iPowermax 45Scotchman Ironworker(2) BridgeportsOkomota Surface GrinderAutoCAD 2010

Reply:Hey SmokinPRanch, in post #19 I see you're using alot of plywood. Do you use that often? The reason I ask, is because I get loads of 1" to 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" old semi trailer doors. I cut them in half to make runners for the bobcat so we don't tear up the grass. It's better than buying it."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Stickman,That's my client's place in the pictures of the spear in use. They sent them to me to show me how good it worked for them and let me use the pictures as I want.I use some plywood because my benches are open top on one half for the inside bench and a cutting grate on the outside bench. I put a piece of plywood down to throw tools and stuff on when I'm working. Free stuff has always been my favorite.
