I keep getting porosity in my start ups on 2" 6G. I always start ahead of the tie in and burn it back. Any ideas?
Reply:Long arcing right on the tie in and throwing porosity. Hold it tighter when you get on the  tie in. I had the same issue with my left hand. On my right hand I strike it like a match directly on the tie in no porosity, no long arc.Miller Maxstar 200 SDPiperliner #10 Gold
Reply:Too long of an arc. Strike your arc closer to your tie in and keep the arc short.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:On a 2" pipe, you can't really weld all that far without stopping to re-position....the angle (arc of the pipe) is changing quickly. So, maybe it would help you if you burnt half of a welding rod on a piece of scrap. Then prep the end of the half burned rod ( make sure that it doesn't have a slight layer of slag on the rod's core, or that the rod core isn't recessed down inside the flux), by either tapping any slag off the end if the wire, or by breaking away the overhanging flux. Now, use the second half of the rod to weld on the pipe with. The shorter rod will be easier to control. It doesn't have all that "leverage", or long "lever arm" to have to control.I'd at least give this a try. If you don't like it, you can always go back to your old method.Rich
Reply:If your doing a pipe test, never stop and restart with a used rod. My advice is to always start with a new rod.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Will the hot start cause porosity? Also, do you push or drag the rod?
Reply:I've never had hot start cause porosity. For me there are 2 things that cause porosity on 7018 re starts. I weld structural steel every day with 7018. Either too long of an arc or a bad restart with a used rod will cause porosity with 7018. Sometimes restarts go good with a used rod but if you have some flux missing from the side of the rod you are sure to get porosity on your restart with a used rod. You will see a pipe fitter welder restarting with a used rod. Because his weld has to pass X-ray every time. Restarts with new rods only.Too long of an arc on your restart and you loose the shielding for a split second and you have instant porosity. What brand of rod are you using?Last edited by snoeproe; 05-28-2015 at 07:37 AM.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:I have personally never had any trouble with porosity on 7018 and boy have I welded a lot of pipe up. I have never failed an X-ray (knock on wood). I have used half burnt rods a many of times. But When I can I will use a new rod for fresh starts. I just have never had a problem with porosity on 7018 ever. Not saying I wont in the future, but up to date....none. I have used some nasty looking rods offshore  my worst problems with any rod would be 6010 they will fish tail on you while burning a root pass or hot pass if the rod has got moisture on them. Heck I use 6010 all the way to the cap on sch.80, 3 passes root, fill and cap(7018).

Reply:h4r means nothing. http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us...4r-detail.aspxIts just a Excalibur rod that I have always welded with.
Reply:I trying to pass my UA 21 so I can hit the road.

Reply:^^^ correct snoeproe. Now I do not use a burnt rod on a weld test again.
Reply:I always start a fresh rod
Reply:It's finger nailing not fish tailing.
Reply:Another issue may be your rod angle. If you try restarting with too much or little rod angle you risk porosity on your restart also.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:What should the rod angle be?
