Hi folks!Looking for some adviceHow to make root pass HIGHER, ---> convex, I do need to see MORE meat on itI am fighting with it for last few nights, and have no cluegot only flush, I do NEED some meet on ittake a look on the ugly flush I do makehttp://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...0113141319.jpghttp://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...0113141320.jpghttp://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...113141320a.jpgI mean the outer root pass, not the one closer to the camera.Root pass , 5G, 6010, sch 80, 6" pipeSo far - I tried60, 65, 70, 75 and 80 ampswhipping and not , circling , pushing, rod run dipper, rod run shallow, slow and fast, not so fastangles - different.. from 30' to 90' degree land +/-1/8,   gap 1/32 and 1/8I am interested ONLY with the bottom of the pipe, between 4 and 8 o'clock.Everything else, with my root, is just perfect.Tnx
Reply:This will work.  First off, I take the same land as my gap (3/32).  With a 1/8th rod-3/32 gap-3/32 land come off your tack into the gap pushing up between the bevels into the pipe and drag it in maybe slightly stepping up.  Rod pressure is key.  The rod has to breathe and be up in the pipe at the same time.  Take it on up from there.  You don't wanna do a bunch of whipping anyway.  Depending on the machine, this has so much to do with how your root will go in via volt amp curve--try 77 to 90 amps.  Depends on the machine.  Get that rod up in there.  Push it in Brotha
Reply:on 6" schd 80 I run about 90 amps for the root with a little bit of whipping action. 3/32 gap and 3/32 land 1/8 rod. don't be afraid to push the rod in .( this is for up hill)
Reply:I had the same problem. I don't weld enough pipe to be any good at it, but what works best for me is no land, 30-degree bevel, I use a 5/64-inch drill bit to set the gap. Four 3/4-inch long tacks. Feather / ramp each end of the tacks. I run + 9.5 on the arc force, and around 55-amps with 1/8-inch 6010. Jam the rod right inside the pipe and listen for that sound. Cut & fill. If the gap is too big to handle I point the rod back on already deposited metal, if the gap starts to close up on me I point the rod forward and lengthen the arc length to cut my way in. If the gap starts to close up too much I stop and run a zip disc through the gap. Reply:Edit: I'm sorry that should have been 7/64-inch drill bit, not 5/64-inch drill bit. Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:And another  few days @ boothI made no land - knife sharpI made 3/32" landbevel as usuallystick 5P and 5P+ ( grey and brick red)I was playin' with and between 55 up to 85 ampsgeez.. no success... Flush, flush , flush, time to time:  bad tie in, undercut, lack of fusion, so common - concavenever ever got the chance to see convex.Got so many pix, but they are same as those posted above. I'll be OK- with jobs not lookin' for some meat at the bottom. If they do, I'm gone.
Reply:One thing to think about, think of jamming the rod right inside the pipe. Just like you're trying to weld on the inside. All sparks should be on the inside, hardly any light from the arc should be seen. I've seen countless pipe welders put in the root pass without even looking at it. I also go by sound, but I don't know how to explain that with the type written word! Reply:wrocek......maybe we should see a pic of your root pass from the exterior.  From the outside, it's natural for the bead to look convex with scary looking slag running along each side.  Is it possible you're trying to wash in the edges of your root too cleanly and thus sucking back your root?
Reply:i don't think red 6010 will help you much. stick with 60105p+bosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin

Reply:Perhaps your trying to hard to make it perfect on bottom slowing down to much causing the suck back . If your set where you can jam it in on the down side you shouldn't have to change till 6:30 or 7:00 o'clock then you'll have to step or cool down 5 to 10 . Hard time putting this in type if you are jammed in coming down all fire is on in side my auto hood will shut off on pipe not coupons . Since your welding on in side almost like long arc when you start up if rod angle and travel are same your to hot transition to whip shortins arc length on whip part of motion  I can show better than type hope this helps
Reply:Use the gray rod.Keep your rod pointed to the center of the pipe as you come from 6 to whatever. Your whip forward should be small... like 1/4" max, come back into the puddle and hold for a second, and repeat. You have to keep changing your rod angle as you come up that corner, and once you hit the 4o'clock mark, hold your pauses a bit longer.I use a 1/8" gap and land. If you're using a 3/32 gap/land you will want to do it a bit faster.
Reply:I would suggest to try to limit your side to side movement if thats part of your technique. Try to keep the rod buried in front of the key hole then move back into it almost like a 1 step forward half step back.
Reply:I'm having the same issue on my bottom half. LolRanger 305gMillermatic 140 AutosetDewalt Chopsaw2 grindersMy Fists
