Ok I'm kinda confused.  When I was in Texas the local feed store rented welding gas cylinders.  I think I paid just over 100 bucks a year per cylinder.  You could travel about an hour north to a welding shop and purchase cylinders if ya wanted to but they also pushed rentals.  Anyway the only place where I live locally now that has welding gas is the tractor supply.  There are a few places that sell various welding rods ect but no gas.  They require you purchase the cylinders and exchange.  There is an Air Gas but they are 45 minuets away.  If I go with the bottles from tractor supply it's going to cost a chunk of change!  If I spend the money and get the big bottles then move somewhere else that does not do the same bottle exchange can I exchange them somewhere else or have them filled?  The guy at TC was new and really did not know.  Also I've read a lot of places won't fill owner big bottles?  Is that true? Not sure the exact CF.  I'm planning on getting an LP cutting torch setup.  I may just forget acetylene.  I've got 2 100lb propane tanks and 2 20lb tanks.
Reply:The real answer is  that it depends on your location...Around me almost any place will exchange smaller cylinders, say under 150 cf or so. Other places the sizes they are willing to exchange as "owner" cylinders are 80 cf... All depends on the supplier.Near me it's tough to rent small cylinders. They push sales. Bigger cylinders are all rental/lease cylinders.I wish I had a better answer for you. If you take a minute and ad your location to your profile, someone near you may be able to make a better suggestion..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:TSC here will only exchange the blue Thorobred bottles.  And they cost 3x what welding supply does.
Reply:To me Air Gas would be the lesser of two evils by far than TSC.Last edited by vwguy3; 01-29-2014 at 08:57 PM.
Reply:The drive to Air Gas would be the way to go, you will still save money over TSC, I use Air Gas here in Fl. I have two 80cf tanks that when they are empty I take them in and get a full tank. I also have a 125cf owner tank and it is the same way I take in the empty and p/u a full tank. All I ever pay is for the gas..
