Have searched online and can't seem to find anything regarding any risks welding with titanium plates and screws in your forearm. I'm going to have an ulnar osteotomy surgery soon to shorten one of the bones in my forearm because its long and it didn't hit me until today to ask the surgeon if there was any risks about having those plates and screws. He did tell me they could be in there for life or might be taken out a year after surgery.I always wore leather sleeves with leather gloves but for some reason when I had an external fixture last year the college they would not let me weld even though I had a leather welding jacket covering the whole thing for the fear of the screws or rods grounding. I don't see an issue if I wear my PPE and the plates with screws will be in my forearm this time not sticking out but I would like to hear what you guys have heard or experienced. If it is too risky then I will put my career on the backburner until I am metal free. Here's a pic of my external fixtures when I broke my wrist last year. This was supposed to prevent the problem I now have but I think it actually made it worse but what do I know, I never went to medical school  Attached ImagesLincoln 210 MPVictor Cutmaster 42
Reply:I am not a doctor or a lawyer however, my dad had plates and screws in his arm and an acrylic plate wired into his skull.  He continued to weld after those "implants" with no problems.  His only complaint was that in the winter he was positive that the plate would get cold.  I would ask your doctor too.
Reply:I have a plate and screws in my filler hand, I spent a year and a half feeding filler bare handed, up to about 250A ac. No Probs.SqWave 200Millermatic 190Airco 200 ACHypertherm PM45Boice-Crane Band SawVictor O/A
Reply:I have two screws in my lower leg. I have to keep them warm in the winter to avoid pain. Welding doesnt seem to affect them as far as I know.
Reply:I don't think it should be a problem, lots of people have screws and metal in them from broken bones and such. I can see why your college was against it with the external brace. They might have been more worried about you bumping it and making your arm worse.
Reply:I've had a plate in my left tibia for 5 yrs and have had no problem w/ the cold affecting it. I don't see how welding could affect the plate, but of course, I'm not a doc.                               MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:Not a Doc here but I do have a handful of screws in my right shoulder and arm, never had a problem with them.Mike
Reply:I have two 3/8" titanium screws in my knee...no problems welding including with TIG and HF.If I ever have an MRI, I'm supposed to tell them beforehand, though!
Reply:Good luck with your surgery and recovery. I hope it does not slow you down too much. Angus in Wyoming-"His only complaint was that in the winter he was positive...." I was just waiting for you say that in the summer he was negative....SA-250 TMDSquarewave 200Thunderbolt AC/DC1951 G.E. welder
Reply:Thanks for the feedback guys. I guess my concern is the part where they are planning to put the plate and screws is the part where I usually rest my arm which is close to the ground clamp. Just having said that it looks like I will have to change the way I hold the stinger and keep my hand steady all over again. I will definitely ask the Dr when I see him which will be for surgery and see if it's something that he's concern about. All I need to worry about now is preparing myself to be in all that pain again and if my medicare will pay for it. I just want to get back to work as soon as I can, it's been a long year not working Lincoln 210 MPVictor Cutmaster 42

Reply:I have a plate and screws in my right wrist.  I have no problems welding with that hand other than the range of motion is significantly less than what it was before I broke it.
Reply:Using high frequency can potentially cook you inside out as the hf impulses heat the implants. You'll notice irritation or pain in the implant atea. This isnt very likely but if you do notice this after welding tig then you need to minimize hf loss. Otherwise welding without hf is fine.
Reply:I sure hope they get you fixed and you do not feel too bad afterwards. Never broken anything that I know of so far, so I can only imagine what you will have to go through. Good luck.SA-250 TMDSquarewave 200Thunderbolt AC/DC1951 G.E. welder
Reply:just be sure to backpurge the arm and surrounding area. cleanliness is godliness when it comes to titanium, so scrub the arm well. clean with a lint free cloth. now you are ready to weld. Mike ZanconatoZanconato Custom Cycles @mzank on Instagram
