I can honestly say this open root stuff is kicking my ars... 1/4" material. 37.5° bevel, 1/16" landing with 3/32-1/8" gap. Option of 3/32 or 1/8" 6010/6011 rodJust regular 1g flat lol. Damn gonna be a long semester. Gonna soak up as much info and experience as possible.Sent from my Nexus 4 using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk
Reply:I'd like to say it's all in the wrist. As you know bout the hole, as in keyhole. It get hot fast. Reply:with that gap, I would definitely be running 1/8" in the 80-90 amp range.if fitup is optional, play with it and find something you like! try a little landing and no gap. knife-edge and no gap. though I never tried it, it was suggested to me to get two plates, maybe 16" long and set up with a root opening from zero to 1/8". start on one end and fill it up! flip it over and see where it looks best.by most pipe guys, im a bit different. I usually go knife edge, and fit tight. I burn it in with 3/32 (baby rod) and get good results, plus I don't have to worry about any extra math! if I am forced into any gap whatsoever (bad fitment) I have to run 1/8". most guys I work with run a gap (.045 with saw blade, 1/16" with wire, or 3/32" with rod, different strokes different folks), a 1/16" or so landing, and don't touch 3/32".when I first started, I had trouble really shoving the rod in there, it just felt wrong I guess but don't forget how critical that is. you should have enough pressure pushing in that you can do it steady one handedbosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:37.5 included or is that just one plate? if that's included angle, then running 3/32" gap and 1/8" rod may be somewhat mandatory. at least in my handbosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:Just one plate. The instructor said what she wanted was practice pieces 7"s long. I'm gonna play with the landings and gaps though for sureSent from my Nexus 4 using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk
Reply:I don't do a lot of open root, but have played with it some. I've come to the conclusion I like 30-degree bevels, knife edge / no land, I use a 7/64-inch drill bit to set the gap. But with each tack the gap will close some. 1/8-inch 6010 at around 55-amps, +9.5 on the arc force. Reply:With 6010 I like to run: -1/8" land-3/32" gap-1/8" 5P+ 6010 -Crank up the "dig" or "arc force" setting. (Dependent upon what brand machine you're using.)If I'm using plate with mill scale I like to use the sander and/or a grinder with a flapper wheel attached to clean off the mill scale on the root side of the plate about 1/2" from the edge of the joint outwards.  I also do the same to the face side of the joint. When I tack the two pieces together I clamp them down to a flat plate I keep handy as my "tacking plate," and use a piece of 3/32" TIG wire as a spacer.  Burn the root in hot, keep the end of the electrode buried in that joint and use a very very slight "whip and pause" motion to keep the puddle ripples nice and tight.  Of course, it's easier for me to sit here and say all that.  It would be a lot easier to show the actual electrode manipulation under the hood in person. Of course, the real world never works like this.  However, I liked giving myself the best chance for success.   Hope that helps.  Scott
Reply:What kinda amperage? I was using 50amps yesterday, and I think I may have the hang of it. Could be a little hotter I suppose.Sent from my Nexus 4 using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk
Reply:With the joint prep I use above, I use 55 to 60-amps, but as the joint closes up I may go higher or open the joint up with a zip disc.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I can't get it guys. Iv tried everything lol. Iv finally got a root put in. But it's ugly. I'm running around 82-84 amps 35° bevel with a 3/32 land. And a 3/32 gap. 1/8" 6010.I'll get some pictures. I'm either pushing though and getting a dog dick on my penetration. Or favoring the crap out of my left plate. The plates range from 1/4"-3/8". Vertical up welds.Maybe turn the amps down a bit? I just dont wanna go to cold and then start "cold welding". And make it a habit.Sent from my Nexus 4 using TapatalkLast edited by the_guy; 02-03-2014 at 10:32 PM.Using Tapatalk
Reply:When we did open roots in school, we started with vertical up, then did vertical down to practice for downhill pipe. Flat position is aggravating.(2) 4" x 7" x 3/8" plates - 30* Bevel, 60* overall, no more than 3/32" gap, no more than 3/32" landing. 1/16" gap worked best for me. Make sure your tacks are at least 3/4-1" long on each end, and the ends are feathered well. Ran about 85 amps with 1/8" grey 6010.
Reply:You realize you're not going to whip this in a matter of a few weeks, and without someone standing right behind you it's going to take longer! We were talking about this subject on another site, Mark Lugo from Everlast suggested I try this another way. Now I'm sure this won't be legal, but my days of working to a WPS are over, so I can do what ever I want. But for now give it a shot, run on DCEN. I found it to be easier! Only thing I found different is with the same joint prep I had to run about 5-amps lower. I also ran a side by side comparison with my Everlast PowerArc 200 and my Lincoln V350-Pro. Strange how a $300.00 import can weld every bit as nice as a $5,000.00 machine made in Cleveland! Reply:Yeah, give it a try! There is more than one way to skin a cat. I never thought about using DCEN for 6010, until Mark mentioned it. I use DCEN for open root with 7018 though.
