Hey everyone. I was wondering if anyone out there has built their own jerry can/ gas cans? With it seeming to be kinda difficult to source good quality fuel cans nowa days ie: nato jerry cans, scepter doesnt sell their military fuel can in usa anymore etc. i was thinking what about tig welding your own jerry style can out of some aluminum sheet. Provided you can find a good solid sealing cap and flange to mount a spout to, it would seem that building your own would be higher quality and possibly cheaper than some jerry cans out there for sale. Anyone thought of doing this?Dynasty 200DX (2014)Millermatic 211 (2015)Optrel 864 (2014)Smith Medium duty MBA 30510 (Xmas 2014)Tennsmith 16ga 4ft finger brake (2015)Trailblazer 325 EFI and excel Thermal dynamics Cutmaster 82Miller maxtron 450

Reply:I just received one from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ilpage_o03_s00 and it is pretty well made.I understand that some of the cheap knockoffs look the same (at least in pictures) but this one was very solid. It tipped over in my truck after filling and didn't leak a drop. Filler nozzle (another $30) is just short of a miracle.I had given up on ever seeing a decent fuel can again but my faith in high volume metal fabrication has been restored! Reply:You guys are funny lol. At least gwiley understands where im coming from My thoughts were that aluminum sheet is used to build fuel tanks and storage tanks so why not a smaller portable gas can. I get aluminum sheet pretty cheap so i dont feel the price difference is too big. Reply:I bought two, a rack to attach them, & 1 pour spout. One was extra truck gas, the other mixed for chain saw. In three months, they were so rusty, nasty, crap swirling in them. My hundred dollars was wasted. Keep us posted, I want to build some. I hope you find fittings. An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.

Reply:You can coat them yourself with a kit from KBS coatings and you can buy the kit from Amazon. I've relined a couple of rusty gas tanks with their kits with 100% success. Reply:they had some of those jerry cans at the gun show to day and to be honest they looked like they were crap /
Reply:We have a local army surplus store here by Camp Shelby. Near Brooklyn, MS. They have legit army fuel cans. they want 50 a pop I think last time I saw them. They were all in mint condition, never been in the field probably. Check into some military surplus stores. I would never try to make my own when you can get military grade.
Reply:Before I would start spending countless hours making an aluminum fuel tank....I would read up on the effects of ethanol on aluminum tanks. I think I read somewhere on a boat forum that ethanol tends to corrode aluminum tanks. That ethanol fuel can be a nightmare.
