Looking at what appears to be an Elgin v-m5. I should see it in person this week. I'm waiting to hear back if it has any tooling other than the collets. Anything I should look for specific to these machines? I understand the basics like when looking at a lathe. It looks like a decent unit from the pics, if in good usable cond. whats a good price range? I am looking to get this for hobby, not for production use, no specific duty for it as of yet. I have a lathe but not a mill.
Reply:It's a mill that was probably made in the 40's or 50's. Uses a 2A collet, which is not common, hope the mill comes with some. You can probably buy some from Hardinge, although at an uncheap price.  Good news is that this was primarily a tool room mill as opposed to a production machine. Typically this would mean less abuse, although it could have passed through several owners along the way. Good news also is that they were a well built machine and capable of quality work.Look here for some info on it:http://www.lathes.co.uk/elgin/page3.htmlAs far as inspection, kind of depends on your level of expertise. 1. Check for backlash in all three axes. All mills have some and it can be compensated for.2. Are the gibs still adjustable?3. Any obvious signs of abuse? Missing hand wheels could be a sign of a tip over at some point.4. Run the table full travel in x and y. If the resistance picks up at the end, means the leadscrew is worn in the middle. This is common and usually where they wear most.5. If quill is operable, run it all the way out and check for play. If you have an indicator and know how to check quill from table, try it.6. Fire it up and run it through the full range of speeds...listen.As far as price, that all depends on how much tooling is included. If fully equipped(vice, collets, etc) I'm guessing maybe $800 given decent condition. This is not a common mill so kind of tough to compare. I'm using similar sized American machines like Hardinge, Rockwell, Burke for comparison.
