C02 bottle info

Hello AllI am new to fourm.Want to get a C02 bottle for my welder, on my parents farm (grew up there) my dad has a few old bottles, mostly acetylene or oxygen form his old cutting touch, it it possible to use one of those old bottles for C02?I have done a bit of welding in the past 40yrs, last year I bought a Hobart Handler 135 at a garage sale for $50! Guy used it for couple hours, said it ws to small for what he needed, had it in his garage for couple years and decided to get rid of it. The welder looks like it has never been used. I got it home and found he had it wired the wrong way, I change it and it works great.Thanks for all your time.VvvV
Reply:Might be able to exchange the acetylene or oxy for a co2. Defiantly can't fill the acetylene with co2 as there is acetone and a fiber material in the tank. I use a beverage co2 tank for when I take my wire feeder out in the field
Reply:You can re-purpose an oxygen bottle for CO2 but should change the valve to a 580 (same fitting as argon, nitrogen, etc) or 320 (standard for CO2 but would have to adapt it for connection to a welder).Acetylene bottles are very different than any other and can't be used for anything but acetylene or wind chimes. Reply:My son exchanged a 5 lb. empty CO2 and a really small steel tank of some sort for two brand-new 5 lb. aluminum co2 tanks at the local supplier. Reply:You can get a CGA 580 to 320 adapter to adapt you inert regulator to CO2 service.
