I was at a going out of business sale and picked up 50lbs of 11018 rod for 60 bucks. I have some hard facing to do on my old D8 Would it be suitable or should I empty my wallet for the real stuffSent from my iPhone using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk
Reply:11018 is stronger than 7018 but not much harder. Might be OK for metal-to-metal wear but probably not so hot for earth-moving equipment. OTOH, if something breaks on your D8, you have some good rod to repair it with.If you are wanting to get the right rod for the hard-facing job, call Lincoln's and Stoody's support lines. They are very helpful and will get you set up with the rods you need.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:What part are you hardfacing?Lincoln pro core 125 14''chop saw7 inch grinder,2-4.5 inch grinders, electric die grinder.Half inch drillAnd alot of hand tools
Reply:X 2. Save the lo-hi for repairs, Stoody makes some smooth running hard rod and it wears well. When it wears down weld alongside the first ones, not on top of them. Reply:The blade. And a couple of the pads on the tracks. It's getting thin in some spots. The old girl has at least 20000 hours on it. It's expected. Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk

Reply:Depends. Cross hatching usually is designed to hold dirt. Thus you end up with dirt wearing on dirt vs metal. Sand on the other hand doesn't stick like dirt does, and you would want to run a different pattern for that.Stoody or Lincoln can suggest not only the rod for the application, but also often how you should run the rods as far as pattern. Here's the Lincoln guide to Hardfacing. I know Stoody has a bunch of PDF's on hardfacing as well you can download. Google "Stoody hardfacing PDF" and you should get quite a few hits.http://www.lincolnelectric.com/asset...ture/C7710.pdf.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I wouldn't use the hardrod on the tracks. The 110 hi-lo would be better and peen the welds w/ an air chipping hammer to stress relieve them. Reply:here is the old hog. I only paid scrap price for it. I changed the oil in both the motors and it started right upSent from my iPhone using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk
Reply:The 11018 could be considered a tough rod but not a hard facing rod. The moly in it makes it work toughen so it doesn't tend to flake off from impact. I use them for resurfacing anvils and have never had a problem in that application. I have also used them on dozer tracks for build up and have had good luck with it and the owners tell me that it lasts well.
Reply:From what everyone has said here I will go buy some hardrod. I called Lincoln today and I get the rod tax exempt because it's for farm use. So that's a plus Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk

Reply:If I was a farmer with a scrap price D8, I would be using the garage Sale special rod.If I am cheap enough to buy both at scrap price, then Tax Exempt or not I would not buy Hard Face at what it costs for an occasional use tractor. My 2 cents! And yes I would use it on the rest of the undercarriage as well!

Reply:Have you figured out how to adjust the clutch and brake on the cable unit? When I was running them we had an old mechanic that could get them set so close you could drop the dozer 1/2" at a time. Reply:I would weld say 4 to 6 inches using the setting from the rod or wire and see if it bonds properly ...if its not then up your amps say 10 and repeat until its right and bonds but still leaves a raised stringer bead If its flat and wide your too hot Bead profile will depend on rod/wire size and power input also travel speed enters in and even angle of the rod/gunSent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2Backed my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me What would SATAN do ?? Reply:That ol' girl should have a reversible fan. Make up some canvas curtains for each side and bring it back to the fuel tank about the same height as the seat cushion, cover the grill w/ canvas. Adjust canvas over grill for air intake to control temp. You'd have to work her pretty hard to overheat. By the way, I don't know how much you've run these old timers, but if you park it for awhile w/ the engine idling put the tranny in neutral and engage the clutch. Replacing a worn out clutch pilot brg is not an easy job.
