A friend has a large boat that they're rebuilding. He has two eighty gallon aluminum tanks that used to be used for marine diesel fuel tanks. The tanks are in great condition and are about twenty years old. He would like to use the tanks for additional black water (sewage) storage. He was told that sewage would corrode the aluminum and would not be satisfactory. I haven't seen the tanks and I don't know what type of aluminum was used when they were built. The second option is to use new heavy duty plastic waste tank containers.What say you? If there's no risk of corrosion, then he will use the aluminum tanks. Reply:Use plastic or stainless. Blackwater will eat through most other things, including aluminum. You could coat it with coal tar epoxy, but it wouldn't be worth it and its fairly brittle.
Reply:Black water is corrosive it will eat the alu tanks we always install plastic blackwAter tanks in the boats same as grey water too we don't even use Alu tanks for fresh water on the boats just not worth the risk.
Reply:Here's an idea he has probably not considered, use them for FUEL tanks. Something seems to tell me they were born to be fuel tanks. That 160 extra gallons of fuel can be handy to have when your boating in an area that fuel docks are not readily available.
