Hi 17 here in my high school welding program. Here is my up hill 7018 welds in some angle iron. What do yall think?
Reply:Looks pretty good man!
Reply:Rod size, amp settings? Doesn't look too bad, but it's tough to give any good suggestions from the angle in those picts. The beads do look fairly flat, but a few the ripples look a bit pointed so your travel speed may be a tad fast..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:A fairly decent uphill weld should look like a fairly decent flat weld  Whether it's pictured laying flat on a table, or pinned to the wall, it should look like a flat weld. These look pretty good.If you were looking at the puddle dead on level with the rod while going uphill, or looking down through the arc from above while going uphill......they look VERY good.  Harder to see what you're doing in that position.  It's rare that you can actually look up from below while going uphill with most of the crap I do it seems  Much easier to make a picture perfect weld while looking up from beneath the puddle."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:To keep the "droops" out of the bead, try keeping the rod at the very leading edge of the puddle, and don't go above the puddle and let it flow down to fill the undercut.  Just drag the puddle up the hill sorta.  Hard to explain without actually looking at it while it's being done, but you'll get it."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Here's something to consider to see what I'm saying. This was a particularly good(for me) uphill run on the trailer I'm building now.  Sometimes the welding God's are looking over your shoulder with a little helping hand  I've got my share of ugly weldsAnyhoo, you can see that metal flows behind the rod uniformly, instead of the "side to side pause thing" and letting it droop back down to fill the undercut.  You're just dragging it uphill like a flat weld. This is 1/8 Excalibur running at 105amps with very little attempt at widening the bead beyond what the rod is capable of.  Keep it tight, and maybe 2 1/2 times the diameter of the rod or so"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Looks good on the outside.  When I was learning to weld in a trade school welding was part of the Nondestructive Testing course I was taking.  We had to X-Ray our own welds then take the film to the instructor to see if we would pass or not.  We had to read the film ourselves and it was tough when you had to fail your own weld and do it over."All of this and some of that's the only way to skin the cat!"
Reply:I always use a very slight side to side oscillation when welding up with 7018. Holding/pausing on each side. On a piece of angle like this I would run one stringer up first. Then weave the next passes in. That's just me. I also run my heat hotter than most others.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:They look pretty good. A tad more info would be nice. It would be good to see inside it too.Regards,RobGreat Basin WeldingInstagramBlue weldersRed weldersMy luscious Table DIY TIG Torch cooler
Reply:Nice welds. With more practice it'll get smoother. Tie in could come down a hair. As said before pause just a tad longer on outside of your weave. But still looks fairly flat. Good job sir.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk
Reply:sometimes a shiny outside appearance is misleading. put 'er on the bandsaw. still want to see inside.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
