If God took way all welding processes and left you with only one,  would it be?  (I know....  another dumb survey, but I'd like to know which mode would be the dominant one here for members on WW).Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:I prefer tig welding, just comes to me easier than mig, but to make $, and faster, I'd have to go Mig.  Way more versatile.  I"d have to get a spool gun for my 256.-AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup

Reply:I voted for MIG just 'cause that's what I mostly use for my hobby stuff, but if I had to do it over I might go with TIG as it will handle the thinner more intricate material easier and to better weld aluminum and stainless."All of this and some of that's the only way to skin the cat!"
Reply:GMAW and a machine powerful enough to spray transfer,  since stick is mostly obsolete.  Originally Posted by swampwelder13Depends, am I allowed to have a grinder
Reply:No grinders, they are mostly obsolete too [/QUOTE]Not when you're dirty steel kind of guy like yours truly Sent from my C811 4G using TapatalkMIG, simply because of the versatility. Solid wire for thin stuff, Dual Shield Flux Core for thick stuff, Self Shielded Flux Core for outside/windy work, Spoolgun/Push-Pull gun for aluminum, etc.

Reply:MIG for me, even though I enjoy stick welding more. I just think MIG is more versatile (thin stuff, aluminum, autobody). TIG just seems too slow for consideration.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:If I can only have one, it has to be Oxy-Acetlyne.  You can  weld almost anything with it, cut, braze, etc.  It works outside, inside, in rain, sleet, snow, any weather.     Even better, it works when the power goes off.  Yes, it's expensive but it does work every time!
Reply:GTAW for me!  It really is the one true "do just about everything" process. With the flip of a few switches & a tungsten change you can go from welding soda cans to bull dozers! You can lay a bead across the bottom of a stainless frying pan, drop an egg in it right away (without even cleaning it!) & have easy over eggs in 1.5 mins!Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.

Reply:Why not make me choose one of my kids over another!I prefer GMAW because it is so quick to set up and clean up. And works well from sheet to 1/4".But you can't beat the amount of raw power SMAW brings to bear.O/A does things you just can't do with electricity. The absolute control/responsibility of GTAW has an attraction for a control freak like me.But if I had to choose one welder to take on a long voyage away from civilization? It would have to be O/A. No, MIG. Wait... No. Grrrrr.LEAVE ME ALONE!Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A
Reply:Mig would be the most versatile but a good transformer stick welder will last a life time, no circuit boards to burn up on the old transformer stick welders. I will have to go with mig but I really really like the good old stick welders. Like CEP I started out welding on a stick machine in 1979 and I will probably leave this life welding with a stick machine.
Reply:Mig  I started on stick but weld mostly flat position in the shop and mig is easy if I had to weld vertical or dirty or out op position then stick . Still learning tig so no comment

Reply:How boring would that be "Just one welding process"  That's like playing a guitar with one chord.  Imagine what cool songs we would have with one chord songs.  How many people would listen to the radio?  If all we had was one process I wouldn't be a Welder.  We all would be making Mcdonald wages. They would probably call us something like factory metal medlers instead of Welders.  I probably would have ended up in some boring profession like an engineer or a doctor. Can you imagine being stuck in a boring job like a doctor?  I can hardly fathom.   It's the diverisity that makes Welding so great and I refuse to choose one.  GIVE ME ALL OR GIVE ME DEATH!!!Downhill Hillbilly.   From the top to the bottom, stackin iron throwin fire

Reply:If I had to choose only one.......Mig for me.  I started out with oxy/acet when I was 14 building my first mini bike.  Went to stick when I was about 21 and stuck with it for many years, only used Tig to repair aluminum heads,  but now my MM252 will do almost everything that I used to do with all the other three.  You can do some pretty thin aluminum with a spool gun if you are careful and boy, it will really weld the thick stuff when you need it to.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma
Reply:Mig seems to be the "middle of the line" and the "do all" best compromise of all processes these days.  However, I choose stick if I could only choose one process.  Give me a 1/16" or 5/64th 6013 on DC- and I can weld ultra thin stuff.  Sure it won't be as pretty as tig, but I can do it without burn-through on most sheet metal.  Stick is still the KING for thick sections.  It is also KING for welding in or with:RustMill scalePaintDirtOily surfacesWindWide gapsAnd in all positions I can do all of the above with one class of electrode too. A 6010 or 6011.   Enough said right there. And as the late great Billy Mayes once said...(Thanks Billy!). Continuing...Stick is KING when needing to put down a shi+ load of metal or bridging a gap and it needs to get done "sometime today."  Stick doesn't need shielding gas cylinders to lug around either!  With stick, I can even crudely cut and pierce steel if I had to in a pinch!  Can you do that with tig or mig and get it done before I finish my coffee?  Hell no!  Both tig and mig need clean pansy-a$$ed weld surfaces.    Both processes sissy-out with a little wind blowing too.  Give me some Jetrod and I can lay more weld down and faster than the best flux core wire too.  Nothing beats 1/4" Jetrod!  If that's not enough for ya, try even bigger 1/2", 5/8" or the whooping 3/4" stick electrodes for the GIGANTIC projects.   See below sample video: Take this you mig/tig/oxy-ace welding nazis!  Stick destroys you all!  So STICK-IT!   Last edited by ANVIL; 03-07-2014 at 03:05 AM. Reply:I answered that poll years ago in a way, I figured out what I wanted to be able to do and spent a long time to figure out the best welder to do that. Bought a used O/A set and haven't looked back since. Sure, it might not be the best option for many specific jobs, but it is able to do many kinds of welding (and brazing, cutting, heating...). Might get a MIG and/or MMA eventually, but for now I manage just fine with only O/A.
