Hey Folks,New to welding and new to the forum...go easy on me I have an Avortech AV5X and their mig adapter with spool gun. I'm welding 1/8 mild steel with .030 wire and 75/25 gas. I can get the current and feed so that I make a decent bead, but I have a problem at the end of every weld. When I release the trigger, I get what I would call a flare up. I get a big, diffuse arc. At the very least it balls up the wire against the tip, but frequently welds the wire inside the tip and I have to grind it down to get it free. Sometimes it looks like the flare up is going from the workpiece to the nozzle. The only way I've been able to mitigate this is to pull the welder away just before I release the trigger, but then I get a lot of splatter.Thoughts? Thanks!Tom
Reply:Is the spool gun live all the time? If it is, that tends to happen and you have to snap out of the puddle at the same time you let go of the trigger. If the spool gun is not always live, then the contactor is not shutting off the current fast enough - in my opinion.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:The gun is always live. So this might be normal? Any tips on avoiding splatter while snapping out? Thanks!Tom

Reply:Sounds like your running DCEN versus DCEP. There should be a set of lead terminals that can be switched to.Miller TrailBlazer 251Miller HF-250-1Miller MaxStar 150 STLHyperTherm PowerMax 380 plasmaLincoln PowerMig 180Millermatic 252Miller Diversion 180
Reply:Thanks everyone. I'm running DCEP...verified with a DMM. Sounds like I just need to practice practice practice. Too bad I'm getting all the practice on a pricy prototype
Reply:Maybe just me..but I found if I double tap the trigger at end I have a more sharp, cleaner stop.Miller TrailBlazer 251Miller HF-250-1Miller MaxStar 150 STLHyperTherm PowerMax 380 plasmaLincoln PowerMig 180Millermatic 252Miller Diversion 180
Reply:Interesting. So you release, then squeeze, then release? About how quickly?
