I know that I have seen at least one thread on this topic posted here, but I can not find it.  I need to build a cattle guard for the driveway into our farm, mainly to keep loose pigs and our Great Pyrenees from going on safari!  I can't use a gate b/c we have a lot of people coming in and out on a daily basis, and my wife does not want to deal with that.  I have never seen an actual cattle guard here in Maine, but have seen lots of images online.  The problem is, I do not have a good understanding of which design features are better than others, what dimensions make sense for keeping dogs and hogs on their side of this device, and what scantlings I need to use to make this beefy enough for a big truck to use it occasionally (I am hauling a dump trailer with 4-6 tons on it regularly, but the grain truck weighs a lot more than that, and I get loads of gravel delivered as well).  Our farm is all sandy loam, so digging the driveway up to install the device will not be a problem.  Any help with this will be most welcome.

Reply:Use "I" beam for the cross pieces and 2 7/8" or 3 1/2" pipe for runners. You want four cross pieces. The perfect width is 15" as you can get 2 runners per stick of pipe. Make sure you have a piece of flat strap welded across the open ends of the pipe, helps keep flexing down and keeps water from inside the pipe. I weld 2 pieces of pipe on the bottom of each "I" beam that sits on the concrete bottom of the pit. Water can go through the pit but you can still lift the thing out to clean the pit. 6' across is a minimum and 7' would be better.

Reply:Could always drill a hole in the bottom of each pipe.  They would get some water in them in a flood but as long as they are air tight not much water could get in and would go right back out when the water level goes down.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Thanks for all the feedback!  I need to finish that fenceline, and then I will post some pictures when I get this built and installed.

Reply:I have built several like the go bob ones they work good with or with out concrete foundation.  Skirt them with 11 ga sheet metal if not pouring concrete.
