I'm going to be getting a 30'x40' pole barn shop with 12' walls. Looking at getting some LED fluorescent type lights to go in it. Is there a formula for determining how many will be needed, how they are spaced, etc?GraysOrnamentalIron.com
Reply:If you purchase your lights through an electrical supply house, they should be able to provide the service of lighting lay out. They or the lighting vendor should have software to lay out your building along with lighting spacing.  They will want to know what the building will be used for.  There is a big difference between warehouse, office, machine shop and processing areas.  You may not need as much lighting in storage areas but more over work benches and metal working machines.  The sofeware I have seen takes all of this into consideration.Dan D.Manipulator Of Metal
Reply:Al the major manufacturers will do a layout for you. Be advised that most industrial lighting is at optimum design at around 16' ceiling height. Too low, you need more of them cause they haven't enough room for diffusion. An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.

Reply:I just put some lights in a metal building I had built - it is 41'  x 24 '.  I put up 3 eight foot florescent fixtures hanging them with light chain and that gave me enough light. I am sure my shop is like most shops and there will be certain areas where the work will be done and the rest will be storage for material and tools so the lighting requirements will be different in these areas.  I bought 5 of the 8' fixtures but decided to use two of them somewhere else, since the 3 gave me enough light. I have a couple of 4 foot fixtures I plan to put over where my work bench is and where I do my reloading for a more light, but since I don't do electronic work anymore, I really think I could do without them. But I have already got the 4 foot fixtures and roughed in the wiring so I guess I will put them up. If you know someone that has a similar size building you might want to pay them a visit and see what they have. Don't think that I have super good vision - I am 68 years old A person can waste a lot of money on lights just like they can waste a lot of money installing an electrical service to a building that handles capacity that is much greater than they actually need. The mistake of not enough light can be easily fixed later on buy just buying some more lights. Then you won't have the problem I have trying to figure what to do with 2 extra ones
