Hobart brand 418  7018s. How do you guys like them ?    I purchased a box in 3/32 dunno how I will like them.  The 1/8's at the hall seem to be quite runny compared to the Blueshield electrodes im used too.  By the looks of the way they are packaged they would have to go in the oven for a rebake before use.  They are not Hermetically sealed.  Why would they do this ?  These rods were purchased at my lws..Journeyman / Red Seal Welder (What a useless test)Miller CST 280Miller XMT 350Miller 12vs XtremeEvolution Evo 28 mag drillEvolution 380 Dry Cut saw
Reply:I buy them for $3/lb locally in the plastic containers. Never had a problem with porosity on start up, so I am going to say the packaging works good enough for non code use.IAMAW Local 330Airco 300 AC/DC HeliwelderAirco Dip-Pak 200 with Profax spool gunPowr-Kraft AC225Everlast PowerArc 200stBuffalo Forge No.21 drill pressSpeedglas 9100xxAirco, Oxweld, Purox, Victor torchesLincoln Ranger 8
Reply:Well it's not Lincoln Excalibur, but I've not had problems with it prior to having an oven and it being "aged" in the plastic containers.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
Reply:Im just wondering why they would package something in such a way that it cant be used for code work?  I didn't exactly like the 1/8"s I ran at the hall so I most likely wont like the 3/32" found them more fluid out of position than the blueshield 7018.  Havent had a chance to try Lincoln Excalibur electrodes.  I will have to see on Monday if the LWS has any.  Best 7018 I can say I Have ever ran are Bohler.  Very good rods.Journeyman / Red Seal Welder (What a useless test)Miller CST 280Miller XMT 350Miller 12vs XtremeEvolution Evo 28 mag drillEvolution 380 Dry Cut saw
Reply:I like the Bohlers as well, but am put off of the fact they're made in China....    Honestly, I don't see much of a difference between the 418's, Blueshield, and the Excaliburs, but my favourite is Lincolns LH-70...
Reply:Yup I agree the China thing is a put off,  they weld nice thoughJourneyman / Red Seal Welder (What a useless test)Miller CST 280Miller XMT 350Miller 12vs XtremeEvolution Evo 28 mag drillEvolution 380 Dry Cut saw
Reply:If the 418's are the same ones they sell at TSC, then they are ok, but not as nice as the Lincoln excaliburs. The excaliburs have flux that peels off on its own when run correctly. The Hobart rods don't do this, and the flux is much thicker. Although they weld easy enough and produced a decent weld bead for me.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:I use Hobart rods a lot. I'd rate then in between Lincoln Excaliburs (great) and Radnor (not great) rods. They are fine for everything I do.My "collection":Homemade Stick WelderVictor O/A TorchAC 225Ideal Arc 250HF 90 Amp Flux CoreHF Mig 170Solar 2020 Plasma CutterPower i-Mig 140EHarris O/A torchHF Dual Mig 131140STAlpha Tig 200x
Reply:The 418's aren't the same ones they sell at TSC.   And OP, as it turns out they do sell it in sealed cans!   Funny though, because every company I've worked for also buys it in the plastic boxes...http://www.hobartbrothers.com/produc...t%26reg%3B+418
Reply:Used them once. I liked how they ran, but the slag was thick and harder to remove. A guy here, Tozzi, used them all the time and he loved them."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
