Today I put together the base to a cabinet I have had on my mind for a week or so...........Apparently 3X3 - 1/8" wall is a bit too thin to run 1/8" 7018 on.......... I forgot that I had to buy thinner material because the 1/4" wall stuff was too expensive for my funds yesterday......So I had to resort to my silly little MIG welder to do the job........ which..... for some reason..... I'm not very comfortable using...........Oh.... and apparently my steel supplier can't cut a straight line to save their life...... I only buy drop...... and use my Harbor Freight bandsaw to cut straight lines to clean up their cuts......I'll post progress pics at some point.... but for now...... .......a video for all to get a chuckle from...........[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WE5gMr-g-RY[/ame]Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:Looking good. What is the cabinet for? 3 x 3 x 1/8 is signifiant tubing for a cabinet, 1/4" would be "car dolley" strong. No sense in adding more weight and cost than needed.
Reply:Thanks......... I guess the comfort level is due to not knowing if I'm penetrating...... This machine is a 110 machine and I typically only use it for tacks........ I had it in my head to use 7018 and when it blew a hole it screwed with my head all day......I'm overbuilding the cabinet just for the heck of it....... Reply:The weight of that cab will be an issue when it comes time to move to a new home, not a trailer out there that'll handle it. I suggest welding a tongue to that for your trailer hitch so you can tow it to your new shop! She's a monster, the cabinet, not your daughter. Nice work, you're fortunate your neighbours don't complain about your grinding, etc. Over here I can't seem to get 5 minutes in without somebody yelping, regardless of how much I bribe them. Seeing as how it's a rollaround, are you going to put a heavy top for work surface? How about a reciever tube for acoutrements like vise, bench grinder etc? How are you going to finish it once it's all done, paint, clearcoat or natural ferrous oxide? Been enjoying your threads, keep it coming!! When a welder tells you to "stick it", what do they really mean?"In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." - George Orwell
Reply:My planning for the top is to put a hinged top on it and use the 2 inch depth as a storage area, but be able to use the top as a work surface. It's 39" to the top, so it's a tad high, but will work well for drill presses, etc.My plan it so paint the whole structure in Rhino Lining black spray paint Lowes sells it for $8 per rattle can. Then, I will use diamond plate aluminum as the sides and door insets. The whole thing will be Black on White. I enjoy combining steel with aluminum in most of my projects.I'm thinking of putting drawers on the inside on the right 20 inches. Not sure on that yet. Reply:If you haven't already welded down the bottom deck, maybe take the plate off the top of the sq. tube and add some tabs/stringers on the side of the tube to allow the plate to sit level with the top surface of the tube. Sure, it may only gain ya' an iota of work space, but if you use the bottom section as cabinets it will allow you to slide in heavier objects without snubbing their toes or skinning your knuckles. Otherwise, looks great! As far as combining aluminum and steel on projects...I'm draining the resources of my local scrap yard for aluminum road signs. So far I've been able to convince myself that a life of crime and getting caught some night on the side of the road with a stocking mask, guilty look, road sign and Crescent wrench just is not the recipe for dignified old age...so far. The $10 eBay w/free shipping metal cutting Harbor Fright D.O.A. saw I bought for the blade and than found from a quick test that the plug was bad works great for the road signs...terrible mess though and the house keeps turning up aluminum dandruff weeks afterwards.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.

I had to settle for Blue since no one within 50 miles had red in stock.....I also laid the bottom of what will become the top tray in the cabinet....... I then put the rest of the horse stall mat in there, which is what I bought that mat for in the first place....... and for grins placed a few tools in there to get a general idea of how I will want it laid out when I get the lid in place......The clearance is about exactly what I was hoping for.... given the design.....A few pics from this weekend slow progress........ Reply:Looking very nice there Fexal. A very nice cabinet indeed. You are doing what I used to do on a pretty regular basis. Built for a portable CNC router. I built quite a few of them. Gets a wood top across the whole thing. Cutout in front is for a chair to go under, so the user can sit at it and use the computer attached to the machine. Welded in bosses for attaching an air filter system for the computer cabinet. Biggest advice I can offer. Run a nice bead of silicon around your treadplates before you attach them. If you don't, they will rattle like a mofo no matter how much you attach them. It used to drive me crazy before I started doing it.
