So a neighbor brought his pop up camper to the house and wanted me to weld the tongue back together. I got it back together and welded up where it had ripped the metal apart and then ran a few beads to either side of it then back on top. Here are a few pictures;Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkLincoln 210 MPHarbor Freight Plasma
Reply:Did you prep area before welding?  That doesn't look like the original hitch either.  Hokey setup.  And probably bad previous welds .  That's probably why it broke in the first place.  Gets out the popcorn and Last edited by soutthpaw; 08-04-2015 at 02:06 PM.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:A little more info. No previous welds had come apart. The metal just ripped. It looks as though there was too much tongue weight at some point. It was fairly heavy to lift and I don't think it should have beenSent from my iPhone using TapatalkLincoln 210 MPHarbor Freight Plasma

Reply:The coupler you welded on is ment for use on box timing. You should have cleaned everything off down to the "A" frame rails and installed a new "A" frame coupler. (As BD1 shows)I would recommend your friend not use the trailer until a proper repair is made. This job might have been a little outside of your skill level.  Dan D.Last edited by DanD78; 08-04-2015 at 02:43 PM.Manipulator Of Metal
Reply:If the owner cant afford a new hitch made to fit the tongue, at least weld in a gusset from the bottom of the tongue rail up to the hitch.                                              MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:'tis the wrong coupler and welded up as is, will be prone to the same failure in the future. How long? who knows, could last a lifetime but still incorrect. You have an A-Frame there and requires an A-Frame coupler like the one BD1 posted. The Bulldog is a a top notch coupler but probably more than what is needed for the Pop-Up camper.http://www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Trailer_Coupler.aspxEd Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:Wrong kind of coupler (tube vs, a-frame).  That was my first thought. Though the welds look good, they are subject to stress like a zipper, and on the side walls of the coupler."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:Easiest fix to make that coupler right would be to cut a 2 1/2" circle out of 1/4" plate. Then, clamp it up underneath the ball socket and fully weld all the way around. I can guarantee the coupler won't break off after that.Originally Posted by cnichall you have to do is say that you saw a trailer once and out comes the tar and feathers, admit using a HF 110 machine and its the concentration camp for life.  If the owner thinks the repair is good then it's up to him use it.  booneO makes a point has anyone ever seen or heard of a poster on the internet being held liable for there post right or wrong.  If this is the case folks like Mr.Tig and others would be in hot water.......clifton

Reply:again does anyone have any knowledge of a poster being held liable or even brought on charges from something on the internet,  If this is true the general forum has to be aware of the possibilities.  If this is simply a unproven myth,  or previously noted anyone in this country can sue anyone.  Over the years all of the experts have made comments of,  oh well I would have done it this way and this is how I would have done it.  Please give us some proof of this doom and gloom.........clifton

Reply:Highly unlikely that anyone is going to be sued for giving advice on a forum.EVEN lawyers get a break from the law in friendly advice incidents. They're actually more liable once you become a client  because they do have responsibility to do a competent job. Now there does exist the real possibility of being sued for welding on something. Ya takes yer chances. And despite all this lawyer hating most have to agree that the lawsuit should be available for those that get crappy work done which ends up causing damage or worse- harm to someone.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:Cheap enough to replace with a new one as far as I'm concerned. Not really hard to cut out and replace so I would have either convinced him to spend a few dollars or threw a empty beer can at him and walked away if he disagreed. Welding work didn't look bad at all tho, so good job on that at least, but you just gotta think about the big picture of reality before you put your name out there bud.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:This is In fact the incorrect hitch for this trailer as already stated. Your hitch here is supposed to be mounted on the end of a square tube trailer tongue. Reply:Most of the older, heavier tent trailers had an A frame tongue that came out and started forming up like it was headed for a traditional 50º coupler but transitioned into some sort of surge brake. Looks like something was torched off the end of that one if you look below the added coupler.  No help here as far as the right type of fix. How thick was the material on the added on coupler?"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
