Friend of mine didn't drain the water out of a pump and guess what happened. I took on the project mainly because I use this pump sometimes myself.  It is cast steel, has stainless piston and valve liners.  I have pressed the liners out, ground, gouged, and hacked out the crack. Welded most of it back up with very little trouble.  Now I have come to the point where I need to fill the crack along the machined areas.  I realize we have some machining to do but what would be the best rod to use here.  The crack crosses a valve port, cylinder, and head bolt hole.  So far I have had good luck with Ni-99 but to re-bore the cylinder to accept the sleeve I think this will be too hard on tooling.  Anyone have any suggestions.  I have capabilities to SMAW, GTAW, Mig, whatever. Got a large selection of rods and filler.  Just don't know what would be best suited to machine. Any help would be appreciated.Lincoln MK 250, Syncrowayve 351, Cutmaster 151, SA 250D, bobcat 225  and want more.4 Daughters, 6 cats, 1 dog, 1 wife and don't want anymore.
Reply:If its cast steel, 7018 with a 200deg F  preheat has worked in the past for me...Tig might be better 309l with pre-post heat...I'm not the guy to ask on that tho...Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Reply:Ni99 is machinable.

Reply:7018 is for those that can't afford Ni99 rod for a cast project. "Hey I didn't come to look and learn, I came to turn and burn.... If I can't light up, I'm gonna light out!"-JodyIdealarc 250 "Fatman"MM 252MM 211 "Little boy" Victor Torches
Reply:thanks for the replies, I need to mention that it is in an area that I can only reach with a stick electrode. The cylinder that is cracked is only 2.5" diameter and 4" deep, only accessible from one end.  I have ground the crack out from the other side and already filled that in with ni99.  I will need to re-bore the cylinder due to the crack changing the cylinder slightly. I only pressed the sleeve out after all other welding was done. Walker mentioned that Ni-99 was machinable.  If this is so then no problem.  I have heard otherwise but hear-say is not reliable.
