Like everyone said i would, i've quickly outgrown my Autoarc 130.  Its just not cutting it anymore. (especially since getting some use on a 211 MVP)That said, I'm looking to get into a bigger machine. As much as I would love one, I don't think a 211MVP is in my price range, but at the same time I have access to the 211mvp to use whenever I want, I just prefer to own my own machine at home.Basically im looking for suggestions in the sub $1000 range. My specifications are really just to weld at least 1/4" and the ability to use a spool gun down the road would be nice. My auto arc 130 was a reconditioned model from hobart, which I have not had any problems with. I was thinking of going for the 210MVP reconditioned for $730.00. I'm open to all suggestions of course.Thanks.
Reply:Knowing your location might help someone who is in your area make a good suggestion on a used unit.Dual voltage machines are nice since you can run 230v at the house for thick stuff and 110v power elsewhere for thinner stuff. However as you already have a 110v mig, the question becomes do you need a dual voltage unit, or can you just get a 230v machine instead. You usually get more machine for the same money if you go to 230v only. Or you get similar output for less money. Down side is many companies have made their 200 amp migs dual voltage now. so if you want to go to that level you either need to step it up a notch to larger duty cycle machines, or go smaller. If you are serious about a spoolgun, I assume you are thinking about alum mig. A 180 amp class mig will do 1/4" steel, but you will max out the voltage and wire speed on 1/8" alum. You really need to be looking at a 200 amp class machine if you want to do alum. That gives you more room for fine tuning on 1/8" and allows you to do a bit thicker alum if need be,1st thing I'd do is start hunting CL and see what is out there. I've seen plenty of really nice older migs go in your price range. I'm thinking that really nice MM185 one member here posted up for sale not long ago as an excellent example of what you can locate.  I've also seen plenty of older MM200's in your range. As far as if they'd be spoolgun ready would depend on what you locate. However I'd happily give up a spoolgun for a higher output mig.Last edited by DSW; 03-14-2014 at 12:55 PM.Reason: spelling. No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:The Handler 210 MVP is a very good solid proven unit. The Handler 190 is also a very good unit. Both are a major step upward over an Auto Arc 130.The MM 185 that DSW mentioned would be a pretty good used unit to look for. The MM 210 that I have sitting in my garage collecting dust would be a good choice in a used unit to look for too. The MM 210 has a better wire drive then the MM 185 and offers more top end power.ESAB Migmaster 250 Hobart Ironman 230Multimatic 215TWECO Fabricator 181i & 211iHH125EZ - nice little fluxcore only unitMaxstar 150 STH - very nice
Reply:If a $1000 is your upper limit why not go with the Hobart 210. Northern tool has them for $900 as of today and blains farm and fleet has them even cheaper I think. You say you want something for at least 1/4, that tells me you need a welder that will weld thicker than 1/4. Trust me, save enough money to buy the 210 or Ironman because I can guaranty you that at some point you will need to weld something thicker than 1/4 inch. My advice to you is buy nothing smaller than the 210. It's always better to have more power than not enough.Last edited by kctgb; 03-14-2014 at 06:20 PM.
Reply:Brooklyn, take your cash and scour clist, be patient and score something good in the $1000 range
Reply:Except for the spool gun and you said you'd weld at least 1/4" how about just finding a good old transformer stick welder?                                                      MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:If you planning on doing 1/4'' I agree with mla2ofus on a 220volt  AC / DC MILLER THUNDERBOLT or a LINCOLN tombstone. Will work great on dirt metal too with 6010 rod. Check craigs list in your area. You may even find a 211 there. Only issue with used MILLERS is seller is trying to get NEW prices for them. That's what I see in my area.

Reply:Here is a bit different machine.. You would have to setup the gun for aluminum with a liner, and probably drive roll. Does has a aluminum slope/inductance setting,so the machine can do it. Probably never run quite as nice as the Hobart"s with it's spoolgun setup. more then likely fine on short welds. Something I have not put to much time in finding out. Now on the other side, and standard Mig welding the Esab Caddy mig 200i is really great welding unit.. Most people that have welded with it seem to really like it. Two reasons I bought it over a Thermal-arc 181i is the lighter weight, and probably the lowest amp draw of any machine machine you can buy. Small generator friendly over the 181. I also think the arc is superior too. (IMO) 100 day satisfaction warranty can take some of the worry out of buying a machine you might not like.. Full money back if you do not like it for any reason. (Like the color)  Have to pay shipping, but 25 pounds (machine not shipping weight) is not too bad. Probably $30.00 extra..http://www.weldfabulous.com/p-6180-e...FQ5gMgodHWIACQLast edited by Brand X; 03-15-2014 at 10:51 AM.Esab/Lorch ET-220iEsab 160i caddyThermal LM-200 Lincoln feedersThermal Pee-Wee 85sThermal 60i- 3phase /RPC powered (Beast)Thermal Drag-gun 35CINE 1500 Klutch 140i
Reply:Hi,  I really like my 181i, Bought mainly for  lighter stuff as I already have a Ranger 8   I have discovered the 181 can be fine tuned with 3/32 7018 to weld almost as light as mig  with the advantage of 180 amps stick will do 1/4 " and more easily  I prefare the challenge And wish to become a proficient stick welder,  Joe
Reply:I'm waiting until I do my taxes first week of April,I may get crushed or I may do ok... The jeep needs new tires too. Regardless, having the cash is no issue, It's more of a justifying the purchase issue. I don't really need a $1500 machine, it's all based on want. I was eyeing this up for the hobart 210. I purchased the auto arc 130 reconditioned and if you didn't know to check the serial number ud never know it wasn't a new machine.http://www.hobartweldshop.com/servle...Handler/Detail
Reply:I'm with those guys, run over to Jersey with $600 in hand.
Reply:A MM200 will out weld any other chit made today.Next up is a powermig 216  but it supposedly does not have the duty cycle.I'll let you know. I just ordered one.Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
Reply:I don't have the space for a machine that size :/Also need the option to use 110v.The ad also says its 29 years old and has no photos. This could mean its beaten to ****.
Reply:Those things are tanks. Even beaten to XXXX I bet it still out welds most units on the market. You already have a 110v mig.... I can understand the size issue possibly being a problem. Advantage of the bigger units, is duty cycle. The MM211/ HH210 top out a bit lower than the MM200 does. However at similar voltages the MM200 will have 2 maybe almost 3 times the duty cycle. A compatible unit today would be an Ironman 230 or MM212 closest I can think of.I'm not trying to push you towards that unit if you don't want. I'm trying to help you make an informed decision. If that was a bit closer, and I had the money on hand, I'd jump on it myself. They are that good a machine even though it's  almost 30 years old..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I love my handler 190. It won't do 110V but they can freqently be had new for under $800 as a package with the spool gun.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:I believe you would need a higher duty cycle even  for 6" pipe, as done here:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...-6-quot-Sch-80

Reply:Pretty sure I want to go with the MVP 210.Two questions1. Refurbished is 2 year full warranty, $800 after shipping and tax.    New is $980 shipped with tax.    Is it worth the extra $180 to get brand new? I bought my auto arc 130 refurb and i couldn't tell in any way that it wasn't a new machine out of original packaging. Does anyone on the forum offer deals on hobart stuff?2. I paid around $315 for my Auto Arc 130 with gas regulator and hose. I got an offer for $200 is that a fair price?
Reply:I bought a 210MVP and for me new is always better because I take very good care of my equipment and I want the longer warranty. When I have a job to get none by a deadline I want my equipment to work. You never know how many miles of wire have been run through a used welder. That's just me and how I feel when buying a mig welder.

Reply:I actually got $50 off from northern tool with free shipping. And for whatever reason It didn't charge me tax I guess they're out of state. So it ended up being $850 brand new says it's direct from factory. It has a metal drive system now? Pictures all seem plastic unless they aren't up to date.
Reply:I think only the HH140 got upgraded to alum drive system the last time I checked anyways. Could be wrong!HH140---------------------------https://www.facebook.com/brandon.pike.9

Reply:Originally Posted by DanA recently built Handler 140, 190, and 210 MVP has an aluminum wire drive housing. I'm drawing a blank right now on when Hobart exactly switched to the aluminum housing on the 190 and 210MVP. It was either during the Summer or early Fall of 2013. The owners manual has been updated to show the aluminum wire drive on the unit. The spec sheet and the website haven't been updated to point out the aluminum housing.
Reply:You are going to love it. Good luck with it. Make sure you only use good quality wire for best results. Avoid the junky wire from HF, etc.Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:I dont know why you people dont run red machines a 250 ac/dc or a DC-250  with a LN -25 or LN  -7 will blow away the little blue boxes the 255 can run a spoolgun. and run  045 all day long. I have a TM -500 ac/dc and could weld anything with it.

Reply:Side note, the Miller MVP and Hobart MVP both claim 3/8" mild steel capability. Is that actually legitimate or is that with flux core and pre-heating it...

Reply:Originally Posted by DanHow stout your input voltage is, is going to have an influence on the top end power you have available. Reply:My new 210mvp arrived today. I had to go home change and run out but I naturally had to at least take it out of the box first. It looks awesome everything packed nicely as expected. Aluminum roller system and nicer ground clamp. Everything seems very high quality what a difference from the AutoArc 130.Was also happy to see the gun cable/hose had the springy protectors to prevent hard bends at either end like its miller counterpart has.Sadly, it is slightly too wide for my crapy harbor freight cart and scrapes on the bolts. I'm not sure if I want to build a new cart yet so I may just cheap out and put some plywood in as a spacer for now. Can't wait to try it out. The fan is LOUD. But I guess that would imply it's got some power behind it

Reply:I have the MVP210 as well, on a crappy HF cart, I just ground down the ends of the bolts and it fits OK, I let the door overlap the edge of the cart so I can open it easier.  My wife got me mine as an Xmas gift last December at a Boomgaars in Iowa and it had the aluminum drive set up as well.  Upgraded from a Weldpak 100HD from Home Depot, much nicer!Hobart 210 MVPOxy/Propane Smith Torch SetupLincoln Wel-Pak 100HD"Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyways" ~ John Wayne
