I've been wondering about this for a while. Let's say I have a galvanized boat trailer and since it is launching into salt water I wanted to protect an area I removed the galvanizing where I welded on the trailer. So I ground the area of repair and welded onto the trailer with mild steel rod. My question is this....Is there a way I can now clean the weld area and heat that spot with a torch to melt some zinc onto that spot to plate it with a true galvanized coating? I know I can spray the stuff in a can on it. I was just wondering if I can plate regular steel with raw zinc stock with a torch.FWIW...I know Zinc fumes are bad...So if its possible, could I just solder over the joints with a lead 50/50 solder. Has anyone ever done anything like this ?Last edited by Tim9; 08-14-2015 at 01:25 PM.Reason: added question

Reply:Fabricators can fill holes up to 3/8″ reliably using Galva-Guard.
Reply:I saw some hot galvanizing (zinc) rods in the solder/braze area at my LWS the other day. Thinking about getting some to try out for repairs to zinc plated stuff.KevKevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio
