Hi, Im looking at a Lincoln SAE 300 with a 2-71 Detroit and I was wondering if anyone could tell me the capabilities? I.E. TIG?, Power output? etc. Heres a Photo of what i am looking at:http://images.craigslist.org/00F0F_1...zA_600x450.jpghttp://images.craigslist.org/00d0d_k...wa_600x450.jpgThanks.
Reply:Hello hotshot01, that's a beast of a machine. It is capable of waking up all of the neighbors, running CC applications: carbon arc gouging (really well), stick welding, wire welding on CC type voltage-sensing suitcase wire feeders (but not solid wire unless you run hot enough to get to spray arc ranges), scratch-start DC tig or with a high frequency add on, HF DC starts. I believe that about sums it up. Oh, and it might be a bit hard on fuel costs. Good luck and regards, Allanaevald

I was a nuclear welder on submarines in a shipyard, my welding experience is solid, but not so much on engine driven machines especially since we only ancient welders where i worked but they all ran off of 440 blocks nothing had an engine on it. The guy selling the welder said it was recently gone through and re-built by the local shop but he did pretty much tell me it was strictly a stick welder and didnt have much generator power since these were just DC machines. Is that true? and what exactly would i need to purchase to tig weld with this rig. I am starting a small side welding buisness and i would like to be pretty diverse in what i can weld, I'm pretty profient in stainless stick but stainless TIG is a little more forgiving and alot less hazardous.

Reply:that looks like a pretty simple setup. i rekon the only factor now is deciding what i need more a very able welder or one that i can run my house on if the power goes out...
Reply:Hello again hotshot01, yes to the fact that these weren't overly endowed with generator power and I believe that it may even be 110 volt DC as well, no AC power. You better also have a good sized truck to haul this around in or else a hefty trailer. As to tigging off of it, DC only and without adding a high-frequency unit it will be a scratch start show. For rig welder work this is probably not the machine for you as there are better (more versatile that is) choices with more options, ie., AC/DC welding capability, CV/CC welding current, more AC power generation capacity, options that make wire welding in a portable sense behave as a wirefeed might that you would have in your shop. In many instances you can rig-up with aluminum wire and tig capability with the right machine and add-ons. A bit more for you to think about. Best regards, Allanaevald

Reply:I will say this much regarding the 2-71 engine, It's loud. Did I mention its loud? I had a monstrous Hobart 600 amp machine with a 2-71 and it was loud and thirsty, awesome air arc performer though. It had it's own 2 axle trailer with the heaviest 15" tires I could find and I'm not sure those were enough. There actually was one time the police showed up at 7 am on a sunday morning to tell me I was pizzing off most of the neighborhood fixing a broken pusharm on a small dozer. Oops.

Reply:I thought about the machine till I watched actually I listened to a you tube video of the 2-71 and thought it might be a bit loud in neighborhoods early. Reply:Yea it is, and I'll probably weld at home just as much as on the job...I got 6 acres, and my neighbors shoot guns every Sunday so I don't think the sound would be that bad, I wear earplugs when I weld anyways. The only downside for me is the generator part. I think I want somthing that I can use of power goes out and also throw down a good bead, so I think I'll keep looking
