When speaking of stick welders on this forum, ive seen it gets challenging to welding thin metals...I know I wont be welding anything over 1/4".. and right now I cant see myself welding anything thinner than 11 gauge steel. But I know what will happen in the future...So how hard would it be to weld something as thin as 15 gauge steel? Possible, just hard? impossible? Thanks!
Reply:1/16" inch is easy with practice.  Most material I do is on tubing with 1/8" or smaller wall.  I have done lot of 1/16 with a ac only machine,  now I use DC inverter.  I usually use 3/32" 6013 rods at 60-80 amps. A close arc is important, it helps direct the heat where you want it.  So possible, just takes practice.Last edited by tapwelder; 10-23-2007 at 12:52 PM.

Reply:I was just welding up some 16 gauge tubing today for doors for a new dog box I am building.  My welder is a Lincoln 225AC and I was at 60 amps ac and having a hard time burning through, 40 amps didn't seem to be hot enough. I was using (I think) 1/8" 6013 rods on it because I did not feel like running 15 miles to go get something smaller. On this particular project I wish I would have had the ability to dial into an amperage rather than have to select either 40 or 60 amps.
