Well I figured it that time of year again to post some pictures of the wild and crazy kind of work I do. My speciality is bridge construction with a side of pipe and snow plows (got to do something when its snowing) So I am going to post a few pictures of some bridges I have welded on during new construction or repair work. We do about half our work at night when we can stop traffic to set beams. The rest is during the day. Please let me get the pictures posted before you all start commenting on them.1st/2nd pictures of welding bearing pads while beams are still on the trailers3rd Rig on the 3rd day it was ever put to work4th There are 7 bridges in that picture and I did the welding of every bearing pad and about half of the end damn on them there. Reply:1st Setting a beam, I think this one was 42 tons if I remember correctly. Theres a 350 ton crawler holding it, the little crawler is a 100 ton holding a 30 ton beam.2nd expanding pot bearing welded in the rain3rd great shot of the over head weld, note bending of rod, I throw out 1000s of lbs of half used rods a year because of this. 4th 60 pot bearing on this bridge I did and some how its was my only picture I took. Reply:What I had to do to weld up 16 bearing pads on the back side, against the wall in the corner. Its a 3/8" fillet. 3 3/4" high (btw smallest grinder I could find was 4 1/4" tall) So you couldn't screw up on this one. I could only bend the rod so I had 3" of rod to weld with to get it in there. Took forever, thank god I get paid by the hour.If any one asked you of you want to be a bridge welder, I recommending RUNNING AS FAST AND AS FAR AS YOU CAN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its worst than being a pipe welder. As in International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Ironworkers...If you weld structural with anything less than 5/32, you are milking the job. Reply:Nice job! But that one pair of gloves in post #8 makes it look like your hands where bleeding pretty bad
Reply:Great job and nice pics!
Reply:On the plate you are welding, is there preheat?also, on you bridge clamps, you have an extention on the lug. did you weld that on yourself or did they come like that? on mine they only have the one square or hexigonal lug for wrench or socket. I love bridge clamps. It is an awesome and eerie sound when on breaks. It sorta makes you squat/duck and then wait pondering life while slowly rising to full height again.

Reply:PS see the KTA inspectors stamp on the work . Also the states and bearing mfg have temp requirements on the bearings , high heat burns the teflon and rubber pads out .Try heating 8" plates to 400 F on our full pen welds and we keep 400 interpass temp work on D1.5 bridge code work . John

Reply:Excellent craftsmanship. Welds look killer. Is there any particular reason that you do not run wire, such as a dual shield out of an LN 25?
Reply:Awesome pics Will!So do you carry all that lead up and drop it down? Or do you have a REALLY tall helper to hand it up to you?Really though, do you always have a helper to move the truck, change amps, carry the lead, etc.?If I ever get to MD, I am gonna be lookin for a stick welding lesson!!!Last edited by Stick-man; 06-09-2011 at 01:11 PM."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Ok so seeing I dont know a thing about welding, what would one use for the settings on the welder and what type and size rod do you use for something like this? Ive delivered tones of equipment to those kinds of jobs, but I didnt relize you get into those tight spots on a huge *** bridge! See again I learned something today!
Reply:I am by no means or ever will be what most on here consider a welder. But I can say, those pics are awesome! I find myself frequently watching shows that revolve around huge construction projects or big mechanical equipment. I am enthralled by the brute strength and engineering that goes behind all of this.

Reply:why dont you shoot a sandbag with a casting line over the bridge? such as tree workers do.then you can just climb once, to pull the bag line, and your cables up. Evena small casting line is #400lb and they sell a wicked slingshot to send it WAY up.http://www.woodlandint.com/products/...t_accessories/
