Reply:My guess is the fin on the back is someones answer to guys beating on rocks with the back of the bucket or an easy way to keep the idiots from using the back of the bucket to back drag and smooth out the ground with the back of the bucket and wearing it out..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:That fin looks like it would be handy for ripping trough frozen ground to keep a neat trench line in the winter... I have never seen anything like it...that looks like a trenching bucket to me pretty narrow by comparison to the ears. It looks HUGE.Miller Dynasty 300 DXMiller CST280Miller Maxstar 150 STH

Reply:Looks like an old Esco bucket off of a old Koehring.  Must be planning on handling shot rock or something, otherwise the wear bars on the inside would make dirt stick horribly.  How wide is the bucket?  It just doesn't look "quarry size" from the pics.-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion

Reply:whatever that fin on the outside is for it must come in handy cause it's worn down. i was just thinking the inside wear bars would cause dirt to stick when you did say it was for rock quarry. nice looking work!i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla

Reply:We get into too much gummy crap around here.  I've had to weld chains inside buckets to try to keep them cleaned out before.  I had a 42" esco bucket that looks a lot like that one on my 170C Case and have had it get so gummed up that we would have to clean it out with a 18" bucket on a backhoe.I'm supposed to go put a new corner shank on a 60" Geith bucket on a 480D Volvo we had rented.  I was running it, then I started running the D9N because we didn't have a dozer hand.  New guy we put on the hoe got a little rough...  He broke the left hand corner shank off of the bucket, then kept prying with then next shank over.  ended up breaking the lip.  2 1/2" thick lip, I spent 22 hours beveling it out from both sides and welding it up.  1/8" 5P+ bead, then welded out with 1/8" and 5/32" 7018.  Sure made me wish I had one of my SA200's going and on the truck...  51 Series Esco shanks.-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion

Reply:Is the bucket made of mild steel and the "armor" added to make it live or is the armor added to extend the life of the bucket after it is worn?

Reply:I would have put the wear strips on the outside of the cheeks up and down so they are perpendicular to material flow rather than parallel.  I would have also put some on the inside of the cheeks, perpendicular as well.  If you hang them 90 degrees from material flow then the parent material won't wear, only the wear strips will, especially in rock.............just my opinion, I've done a coulple before.6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers

Reply:Yes...........so the flow of material is across the bars not with them.  If the flow is running the same direction, the material will keep the spaces in between the bars cleaned out which will result in the parent material of the bucket being worn between the strips.  they don't have to be exactly vertical, but enough so the material passes ACROSS and not WITH ............clear as mud?? Originally Posted by admsweldingI plan on adding more bars to the inner cheeks.Just ran out of time this day.your i saying should put theses on so they run vertical inside the bucket on the cheeks?
Reply:One more thing to consider is weight............you're starting to hang ALOT of weight on that bucket..........which will lead to boom, stick and bearing issues later on.  It's a fine balance....you want protection, but you also want your protection to be efficient............a guy could put 6 inches of 500bnh armor all over the bucket and it would'nt wear out in 40 years, but the rest of the machine damn sure would..6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers
Reply:These guys are into shot rock. With a little material/dirt but mostly rock, rock and more rock.
Reply:I  see loader buckets used 24/7 to move de barked pine logs, ground into chips. I wouldn't expect much wear at all. I'd be wrong! It's kind of amazing how fast edges. cheeks, and internal surfaces wear. They even use hard surface on inside surfaces. I expect it on cutting edge where it rubs concrete, not elsewhere.
Reply:Next time tip it over and crib it up so the poor old guy doesn't have to use a ladder Originally Posted by admsweldingBeing linebored by a guy that knew what he was doing. Not someone who says they can on there business card then shows up clueless. You Know who you are I won,t mention names. This bucket is now in use ripping shot rock.
