About 2/3rds of the way through my first 10 pound can of 1/8 excalibut 7018 rods. Running them about 140 amps. 2 pads of beads then a tee joint done in three passes (pictures of every pass). I know some folks say to overlap the beads by 50% for a pad of beads, but only really tried that toward the end of one plate. Otherwise I wasn't really trying to overlap them, just trying to run as straight a bead as possible.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:Don't you just love 7018???Way better than "other" rods for steel repair work. IMVHO!!!!Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024
Reply:Here are some miscellaneous tee joints run on some smaller (1/8th) material. some of these are over old mig welds. The burn through was from trying to gas weld these plates last week. I am just trying to reuse old coupons. Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:Yeah, I am getting used to them and like them. I am a self taught weldor and had been burning mostly 7014 and 6013 before last week.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:Looks pretty good.!
Reply:Just curious what machine are you using?  140amps seems pretty high for that rod.  I run them at 120 amps on a Lincoln Power Mig 350 and 125 amps on my little Everlast Powerarc 140st.Obviously every machine is different so I'm just being nosey
Reply:Hobart Stickmate LX AC/DC, DCEP...so the number is really just an estimate, plus who knows what my actual line voltage is.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:Yeah I find 125 to be the best on flat with bigger shop machines

Reply:Are these good enough that I can try my hand at vertical or horizontal position welds? and if so, should I try vertical or horizontal first?Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:At the tech school we'd have you do some lap joints, then some T joints and then outside corners 1st before moving on and changing positions. When you change, do horizontal 1st.You are doing very well. You'd be more than ready to do lap joints, and your T joints look pretty decent from the few you have done..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
