Hey Guys,I'm doing a large amount of aluminum sheet metal fabrication. I'm renting time in a shop that has Mechanical shear and press brake. The biggest trouble I'm having is scratches, scars on the finished products. The biggest cause of the scaring is the shearing process. loading, feeding, and the drop sliding down the back of shear. Is there a material and or process that is used to cover/coat surfaces of shear, bed, drop slide, etc... that is renewable, easily applied  that will help preserve the finish of the aluminum sheet metal?Miller TrailBlazer 251Miller HF-250-1Miller MaxStar 150 STLHyperTherm PowerMax 380 plasmaLincoln PowerMig 180Millermatic 252Miller Diversion 180
Reply:Typically for ascetically critical pieces you get sheet material that has a a thin plastic covering already on it that stays on until its ready to be welded.I have gotten away with covering the shear bed with cardboard, but there's nothing you can do to prevent scarring from the brake.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:+1 on what's already been said, could also lay/tape a scrap of old carpet behind the guillotine to stop the material getting damaged by the drop.
Reply:Rub a honing stone over the shear table & take off any burrs, then put craft paper on the shear table & back ramp of the shear.  The carpet is a good idea too.You can use thin vinyl sheets, or even a thin piece of alum stock as a slip sheet to prevent brake marks. (Adjust the brake accordingly).Make sure everything is clean.Hope this helpsBuy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
